Uptown Players kicks off the weekend with a new show and new season announcement

Today is a big day for Uptown Players. Early on Friday, the company released the show listing for its new 2025/26 season. This comes on the same day as it opens Xanadu: The Musical which you can read about in this week’s issue.

THis new sason will feature five shows that include world and regional premieres and reimagined favorites that celebrate “queer joy, resilience and theatrical rebellion.” Shows will be staged at the Kalita Humphreys Theater and at Theatre Three. The season will launch this December.

“Uptown’s latest offerings spotlight the voices and visions that challenge convention and champion community—proving once again why it remains a trailblazer in inclusive Dallas theater,” the company stated in today’s press release.

The season includes:

Dec. 5-14: Star of Wonder: A Carol Ann Christmas. This world premiere, by Mark Waldrop with additional material by B. J. Cleveland starring Micah Green, kicks off the season with the unforgettable Carol Ann Knipple—first seen in When Pigs Fly—for a holiday comeback. After her Melody Barn theater in Minnesota burns to the ground, Carol Ann refuses to give up her dream and relocates her Christmas spectacular to a Dallas stage. Casting chaos and theatrical surprises are all led by Carol Ann’s misguided vision and determination.

March 20-29: Pure Glitter. This Texas premiere is a new comedy by Chicken & Biscuits playwright Douglas Lyons. A love letter to the chaos of chosen family and queer friendship, the story unfolds during a surprise 10th anniversary bash thrown by Stan for his husband Tony—but when a handful of uninvited guests arrive, the night explodes into a whirlwind of secrets, sass and unexpected truths.

April 30-May 3: Broadway Our Way 2026: Fractured Fairy Tales. Written and directed by B.J. Cleveland, this annual fundraiser musical revue turns “happily ever after” on its rhinestone-covered head, blending Broadway’s biggest hits with a world of royals, witches, misfits, and rebels through a mashup of showtunes and fractured folklore.

July 10-19: Urinetown: The Musical. This Tony Award-winning satire by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis that skewers capitalism, bureaucracy, and environmental collapse. In a city where private restrooms are banned and a corporation controls the most basic human need, a rebellious uprising takes shape. Uptown Players brings this timely production to life with a sharp eye on justice, activism and the enduring power of community to challenge the status quo.

Aug. 21-30: Mother Play. This regional premiere is a new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel. Spanning from 1962 to the present, this semi-autobiographical drama follows Phyllis, a fiercely independent single mother, and her two children as they navigate evictions, emotional upheavals, and the fragile balance between love and self-preservation. As the children grow and define their identities—often in defiance of their mother’s expectations—the play paints a vivid portrait of resilience and generational conflict.
Performances held at Theatre Three.

Discounted premium and regular seating packages start at $135 and are available now at UptownPlayers.org. Sales for individual tickets go on sale Sept. 2.

Due to an unexpected zoning issue with the City of Fort Worth, SSG had to adjust its opening timeline for the upcoming season. As a result, the Stolen Shakespeare Festival has been rescheduled for Fall 2025, and My Fair Lady will now happen in Summer 2025. The company announced this earlier this month.

“While this delay was not part of our original plan, we remain fully committed to ensuring a smooth and successful opening for our new theatre space. We sincerely appreciate your patience, understanding, and continued support during this transition,” SSG reps said in the press release.

Below are the revised performance dates.

July 11-27: Hairspray.

Aug. 8-24: My Fair Lady.

Sept. 19-28: A Murder is Announced.

Stolen Shakespeare Festival 2025: Masks of Deception

Oct. 10-Nov. 2: Twelfth Night.

Oct. 17-Nov. 1: Richard III.

Dec. 5-21: A Christmas Carol.
