Survivors Offering Support is a newly formed group of people who have survived the recent attacks in Oak Lawn and elsewhere. Its new website went live yesterday, in time to help one of the latest assault victims.
The website is asking for donations to help crime victims get back on their feet quicker and take steps to make Oak Lawn safer.
Tito Gonzalez was walking home from work on Cedar Springs Road on Sunday night when he was attacked by two men on Reagan Street. In addition to inflicting physical injuries, his phone and rent money that he was carrying home with him were taken.
SOS co-founder Michael Dominguez wrote him a check to cover his rent for the month last night. To make up the difference between what was collected in the first hours the website went live and the amount needed, Dominguez advanced his own money.
Councilman Adam Medrano, who represents part of Oak Lawn, announced he is partnering with the Resource Center and Crime Stoppers to develop information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of the attacks. Crime Stoppers is offering up to $5,000 for the arrest and indictment of the individuals responsible for these offenses.
Resource Center spokesman Rafael McDonnell said he reached out to Crime Stoppers about a month ago about the first few attacks. He asked Medrano to help in this case and also in the case of Miss Shade, a transgender woman whose body was found in a field in northwest Dallas over the summer. He said he was pleasantly surprised by the amount Crime Stoppers is offering.
“I’m heartened and hoping it’s enough to get someone to say what they know that will lead to an arrest,” McDonnell said.
