HGTV has begun production on a new competition reality show called Showhouse Showdown. On it, two designers compete to see who can turn a spec house into the more impressive showplace in a short period of time on a tight budget. (Think Trading Spaces with prize money.) One such house face-off features Dallas-area designers.
Here’s where you come in. On Saturday — that’s June 4 — the members of the public get to walk through the sample homes and cast their ballots for who has done the better job. That means you get to decide the outcome and give kudos to a local talent. All you have to do is show up to 204 Oak Point Drive in McKinney, Texas (75071 if that helps) between 2 and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The episode revealing the winner will air sometime around the fall.
By looking at the picture I see spec houses haven’t changed much in the past half century. I see seven different window types on one facade, three windows with shutters that when closed are not wide enough to cover the window, three different exterior wall veneers, three different roof types, a grass driveway and a tree planted in front of the garage door. Although these design characteristics are baffling to me I however realize they are desirable to many people, somewhere, somehow.
