Katie Sowers, assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers assistant coach Katie Sowers has become the first openly LGBT coach in the NFL.
Sowers, only the second woman to be a full-time assistant coach in the NFL, told OutSports, “No matter what you do in life, one of the most important things is to be true to who you are.”
Sowers, 31, who played pro football in the Women’s Football Alliance, said there are a number of LGBT people in the NFL who aren’t comfortable coming out publicly. She also said she first experienced anti-LGBT discrimination in sports when she was rejected for a volunteer coaching job because of her “lifestyle.”
Still, she said, without that experience, “I would not be where I am today.”
She was hired as a full-time assistant coach for San Francisco for the 2017 season after an internship with Head Coach Kyle Shanahan.
