Davis.KimKim Davis, the Rowan County, Ky. Clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite multiple court orders, received an award on Friday at the Values Voters Summit, a national summit for social conservatives.
Davis received the “Cost of Discipleship” Award from Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, for her “pursuit of justice at great cost.”
Perkins called Davis a model for religious liberty.
“I can tell you that Kim Davis wasn’t looking for this fight, but she is not running from it either.  What militant secularists are almost certainly afraid of is what is coming to pass: courage is breeding courage. When other people might have cowered in fear, Kim took a stand,” Perkins said earlier this month. “And today, millions of Americans stand with her and for the religious freedom upon which our nation was founded.”
Davis, according to The Huffington Post, received a standing ovation as she took the stage.
“I feel so very undeserving,” Davis said. “I want to start by thanking my lord and my savior Jesus Christ. Because without him, this would never have been possible. For he is my strength that carries me.”
The award cites Abraham Lincoln and Rosa Parks as its models. Neither of whom, unlike Davis, cited religious liberty fas reason for their opposition to societal injustices.
But, also unlike Davis, neither had the benefit of getting a microphone often given to self-righteous social conservatives by their wealthy handlers either, much less Sen. Ted Cruz, who won the summit’s presidential straw poll.
The summit ends tomorrow.
