State Rep. Jessica Gonzalez, D-Dallas, has been appointed vice chair of the Elections Committee and a member of the House Committee on Insurance. She is a founding member of the Texas House LGBT Caucus.

“I got my start in law as a professional voting rights attorney for Former President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign in 2012,” Gonzalez said in a press release. “As representative for the people of House District 104 and now Vice-Chair of the Elections Committee, I look forward to working with our partners in county government, as well as voter rights advocacy organizations, to protect and enhance the right to vote for every Texan.”

The Elections Committee is a standing committee with seven members and has jurisdiction over”

  • the right of suffrage in Texas;
  • primary, special, and general elections;
  • revision, modification, amendment, or change of the Election Code;
  • the secretary of state in relation to elections;
  • campaign finance;
  • the duties and conduct of candidates for public office and of persons with an interest in influencing public policy; and
  • these state agencies: the Office of the Secretary of State and the Texas Ethics Commission.
