Despite a shaky start with severe weather that caused the opening night of Razzle Dazzle Dallas to be postponed, committee members called the weekend’s event a huge success.
Attendance at Saturday’s main event increased over last year. The preliminary estimate is that about 25,000 people participated in the Saturday night event on Cedar Springs Road. Last year an estimated 15,000 were out on the street on Saturday night.
“The Razzle Dazzle Dallas Committee is very pleased with this year’s event,” said John Cooper-Lara, chair of Razzle Dazzle. “We wish to thank everyone for the support the community has shown this event. This includes our great sponsors, volunteers, businesses and the AIDS service and community organizations. We also want to especially thank the 25,000 people who came out to celebrate June Gay Pride Month.”
According to Cooper-Lara, attendance at Friday’s MetroBall, which featured a performance by Taylor Dayne at S4, increased by several hundred over last year. MetroBall benefits the Greg Dollgener Memorial AIDS Fund that offers financial assistance of last resort to people with AIDS.
The Cedar Springs Merchants Association’s wine walk, which was supposed to be the opening night event but was rained out, will take place this Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. along Cedar Springs Road.
Last year, checks were given to beneficiaries the last week in June. No word yet on a final accounting of the event or when money will be distributed. Nine LGBT and AIDS organizations benefit from Razzle Dazzle.
Next year, the Razzle Dazzle Dallas Main Event will take place on June 8. The full event is expected to run June 5–8, 2013.
