Just arrived at the Meddlesome Moth in the Design District, site of Mike Rawlings’ watch party. Despite the heat, there’s quite a crowd here on the patio, where Rawlings was making the rounds as I came in. Rawlings campaign staffer Paula Blackmon told me he’ll be speaking at 9 p.m. When I noted that early voting results look pretty good for Rawlings, Blackmon replied, “It’s over.”
Kaplan and Wilder in Carrolton….?
About the only thing in the recent joint press released by the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance and Stonewall Democrats of Dallas’ press release attacking me for predicting a Rawlings’ win and The Dallas Morning News for commenting on it was the description of the LGBT community as large and diverse. Just as I said, Rawlings appears to be the winner. The horror of the whole thing is that DGLA issued a warning against Rawlings, instead of just endorsing Kunkle. The truth is that DGLA is a tiny group of people and they by no means represent the interests of Dallas’ large, diverse LGBT community. It’s probably gotten to the point that their actions don’t deserve the attention they get from the media in reference to representing the LGBT community.
Oh lord David, you need to calm down about DGLA and Stonewall. I agree with you but your posts have been silly.
OK, Lenore. I’ll calm down, but I’ll never quit being silly. Have a fun Sunday.
I think the DGLA/Stonewall/Webb debacle should be tossed aside and maybe an article about how the organizations need to re-evaluate their involvment after this election. Stonewall not going for Hunt was bizarre and the warning on Rawlings was not clear.
As a member of the DGLA PAC that made this year’s endorsments, I was satisfied with the process and the candidates we endorsed. Understandably, the warning was quite confusing for those who were not in the room during Mr. Rawling’s interview. Because of interview confidentiality, we were unable to provide the public with a clear reasoning behind the warning but we felt, as committee, that a warning should be made knowing that most people wouldn’t get it. I felt that is process was educational and definitely helped with my voting decisions at the poll. Now it’s time to move on and keep Dallas moving in the right direction. Hopefully we have the same, if not more, support at City Hall.
It would be nice if one could disagree witht he politics of DGLA and Stonewall wtihout name calling. As David Webb has stated, they do not deserve the media attention they get as far as representing the gay community. One wonders how they garner all this media support. As Tisha has stated, people from a small group meet with a candidate in a confidential room and decide who they “think” we should vote for. Thank for doing that but many of us can make our own personal decisions.
How could DGLA have made a clear decision on anything when they did not even have their own facts straight? They made a decision to not support a candidate based off of a question that was irrelevant. I’ve spoken at length with PAC members who were dissatisfied with the leadership and witnessed first hand just how little was known of each candidate before making decisions. I for one will not be following the DGLA or Stonewall recommendations in the future and instead will actively seek out the questions to my own answers in other forums. I think both organizations need to look at their leadership, the processes for making decisions, and adjust accordingly for future elections before they lose any more respect from our community
Thank you Jack…the purpose of the PAC is to make recommendations and to do the leg work for some people who don’t have the time to research the candidates. I can recommend to Jack that I think he would look good with a mullet but that doesn’t mean he has to take my opinion into consideration. That’s the whole point. If you don’t like the recommendations, don’t use them. It’s as simple as that. I feel that our community should engage with candidates and an organization/media outlet (talking about DMN) has a right to post who they feel is suitable for the job. If you think you can do a better job, then please contact the board members of DGLA or Stonewall. I am sure they would appreciate your input.
Most everyone in the community contributes to its well being in some manner, and volunteers of organizations should be commended for the extra work they do. We can’t all agree on everything all of the time, and that’s certainly the case with politics. Stonewall Democrats and the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance have both greatly benefited the community and so does Log Cabin Republicans, for that matter. It’s just that no single organization can speak for all of us, and everyone’s voice is as important as the next person’s. And it’s always good to have new people entering an organization to provide a fresh perspective. I apologize if anything I have written has left the impression that I don’t appreciate the work of LGBT activists because I sincerely do.
