Rational Radio, which airs on 1360 AM locally, already has a pretty gay weekend lineup with The Jack E. Jett Show on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Now, Sundays start getting gay in the morning.
On Oct. 4, gay radio vet Rick Vanderslice teams up with poet R.J. Jackson for the premiere of The Rick and R.J. Radio Show, a weekly two-hour chatfest that pairs a young Gen-Yer with a Baby Boomer. The inaugural guest is Lambda Literary Award winner (and occasional Dallas Voice contributor) Jenny Block. The second hour will feature interviews conducted during the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade.
And immediately after, you can get your Jack on.
You’re right Arnold. Rational Radio does have a “PETTY gay… lineup.”
But if this Dick Van de Kamp guy is gonna be on the radio… PLEASE ask him to learn to speak our language first.
I know he just got off the bus from Boston or somewhere…. BUT we don’t say “pop” around here. We say “soft drink” or more specifically, “Dr. Pepper.”
Carpetbaggers are bad enough, but carpetbaggers who can’t be bothered to learn the local colloquialisms send up big red flags.
When he goes around saying things like “we can get together for coffee or pop” you don’t listen to another word that comes out of his mouth because you are trying to figure out if he just said “pot.”
And then you feel so let down when you realize that he didn’t just offer to smoke a joint with you, but rather just asked you to share a soft drink…
Just so everything is clear and people won’t have to wonder what Brandon means in the first sentence of his comment: There was a typo in the opening sentence of Arnold’s post that COMPLETELY changed the meaning of the sentence, and that it was Brandon was referencing in his comment. I corrected that typo,
Congrats to Rick and RJ on your new show. I’ll def make sure I’m listening!
Actually, Rick Vanderslice grew up in Dallas — park cities, I believe, Rick is also a Katie Award winning veteran of Dallas-Fort Worth radio and television, including the long-running The Evening Talk Show with Rick Vanderslice on KERA-FM, the Dallas affiliate for National Public Radio. I worked with him in the 1980’s when he was KMGC 102.9. He’s smart, talented and and actually a very good person who cares about the community and its people. We are indeed fortunate to have both Rick and RJ working in DFW Talk Radio.
I want all of you to know that I will continue to believe that most of you who read The Voice and follow Instant Tea are smart, curious, good, and honorable people who aren’t just interested in dumping on people with so little information and insight as to what they are talking about. Brandon might have done some homework before calling me a carpetbagger. I’ve been in Dallas radio and TV since the late ’70/s and have been part of the Gay Rights Movement since the Stonewall days working along side Bill Nelson, William Wayborn, Mike Richards and the other pioneer Dallas activists.. Should have done some homework, Brandon. And forgive me if I describe my Dr. Pepper as pop or even pot for that matter. It doesn’t seem to bother me much but why it brings out such paranoia and pettiness in you is a bit of a mystery to me.
R.J. and I have worked very hard to create a good and entertaining two hours of radio. If you would like to evaluate the quality, or lack of quality, of the work we do please go to our website at http://www.rickandrj.com and listen. After that minimum amount of preparation on your part, RJ and I, will gladly accept any comments and reactions you would wish to offer. In other words, go see the play before you write your review. Just a Thought.
Finally, for everyone else who may be interested, in the 1 O’Clock hour, we will run a portion of an interview RJ and I conducted with author, playwright and Gay Rights icon Larry Kramer while he was in town to be honored in the parade and rally. We’ll have the complete conversation with Kramer at our site The Rick and R.J. Collaborative at http://www.rickandrj.com.
We hope all of you will try to check out our show this and every Sunday, 11 AM to 1 PM on Rational Radio KMNY AM 1360 in Dallas. We’d love to hear everyone’s feedback. I know most of you will wish us well.

I really enjoy the Jack E. Jett show and Rick’s contributions. If you are not listening, you might as well be straight. On the same radio station everyday from 4 until 6, Richard Hunter is also really a great show. I have the highest respect for him because he constantly stands up for GLBT people even though he is straight. And you can giggle because his nickname is “Big Dick Hunter”. Pugs and Kelly show is good, too. If you haven’t tried AM in a while, find the button and make the switch. Support a station that is REALLY supporting us.
First of all, thank you Arnold for OUTING me. You know I have been trying to keep my homoness a secret for years. I have even kept it from my husband John, for the past 20 years.
We at Rational Radio are thrilled to have Rick and RJ (the young one) join our family. I don’t think there is a radio station that is more supportive of the GLBTQ community and I am so proud it happen to be in Dallas.
While Rick and RJ will add some brains to our Sunday, I will continue to add the beauty as well as my eraser sized nipples.
Brandon should apologize. Ignorance isn’t funny.
I think Jack e should apologize for making me think about his nipples.
A lot of older Texans call it “pop.” My fifth grade teacher certainly did, and she’s as old school Texan as they come.
