Daniel Graney, president of the Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus, reports that Bexar County Democratic Party Chairman Dan Ramos refused to apologize or resign during a press conference earlier today.
Instead, Ramos hurled new epithets and against referred to gay Democrats as “termites,” said Graney, who lives in San Antonio.
Graney said Ramos is holding a fundraiser tonight for the Democratic Party in downtown San Antonio, and members of Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio plan to protest outside.
From the Bexar County Democrats website, directly above a photo of Ramos:
Who We Are
Before all other things, we are a family of many different kinds of people. We come from all walks of life. We are home-makers, business people, factory workers, public servants, educators, soldiers, preachers, you name it – we’ve got it. We come from all skin colors, religions, cultures, genders, sexual orientations and gender identities. We don’t exclude. That is who we are!
UPDATE: Sam Sanchez of QSanAntonio.com was at the press conference and reports that rather than resigning, Ramos said gays are like “white termites who have infiltrated the party much like termites infiltrate your house.”
Ramos called Choco Meza, the woman who opposed him in last year’s election, a lesbian, and he said gays have infiltrated the party. Sanchez reports that Ramos called Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie a racist bastard and an idiot who is advised by gay people.
CORRECTION: As indicated in the comment below, Ramos did not hold the fundraiser. The event was sponsored by Proud Democrats of San Antonio, a group that has not yet condemned Ramos’ statements. The top of their website indicates that they promote equality, diversity and tolerance. I guess that would include Nazi termites.
Ramos reminds me of the old Dixiecrats. He is a bigot who just happens to vote Democratic. Pity he can’t understand that all minorities, both sexual and ethnic are in the same boat when it comes to discrimination.
I understand there are lots of openings at the GOP for bigots, perhaps a career change is the answer?
Ramos is correct. Gays have infiltrated the party like termites infiltrate a house. What he fails to realize is that when termites infiltrate your house, they cause damage. When gays infiltrate an organization, it generally has the opposite effect.
Thank you for posting this update, David. One correction – Dan Ramos did not “hold” the fundraiser last night. He wasn’t even there. It was sponsored by an organization called Proud Democrats of San Antonio, whose leaders have been aligned with Mr. Ramos in the past but are now distancing themselves from him, even though they have yet to issue a public statement condemning Ramos’ remarks and calling for his resignation. If you could correct this, I would appreciate it.
Daniel Graney
Dan: Correction appended to the story. How did the protest go?
As controversial as it might sound, we are only fooling ourselves if we think that Hispanic and Black religious types are our friends. Just like whites, they think that being gay is a choice and we are destined for hell. So when we support groups like LULAC, they are taking our money while stabbing us in the back. We are never going to win while fighting the homophobia that exist in any church of any color.
Hopefully Ramos will resign before he manages to cause himself more shame down the road. Also…Anon, you mentioned LULAC and appear to believe organizations such as this and other groups that profess to be gay or gay friendly are not our friends. If you pull up LULAC’s webside or Google “Jessie Garcia you may begin to think otherwise. Jessie is one of the sweetest, most honest and caring individuals I have the honor of calling a friend and yes, he is and out and proud gay Latin man. Being in the south we have a large hispanic population, many of whom I have been greeted by with open arms and kisses when I walk in to bars such as Kaliente or Los Rieles. I am far from looking Hispanic or African-American, but I have never felt unwelcomed as a caucasian male in any establishment that was not “white owned”. Also, I do not feel that any of those organizations work to harm the gay masses in general. Like my mother used to tell me, “You’re more likely to be harmed by someone who looks just like you than those who may look somewhat different, so treat everyone with respect and know that there will always be someone who looks different or acts different but they are no less human and no more human than you.” Words that will always be with me. If we would stop the conspiracy theories and judgements within our community, we would be so amazing and we could do even greater things.
