Austin-based soul artist, Nakia, drops his latest single from forthcoming album
On Friday, Austin’s own queer blues singer Nakia released his new single, “Mary Mary,” from his upcoming ‘80s synth-rock-inspired album Signal set to be released on May 30.
“’Mary Mary’ is a hypnotic, groove-driven track that blends rock, funk, and synth-pop with a bit of Memphis soul,” the singer said in the song’s announceent. “The groove is deep, with an infectious bassline and Stax-inspired guitar licks that cut through in just the right way. I was inspired by artists like Erasure, DeBarge, and The Eurythmics—those sounds that feel both familiar and fresh at the same time. Lyrically, it’s about that frustrating feeling of wanting someone who just won’t see you the same way. If you’ve ever been in that situation, this song will probably hit home.”
Nakia is also an official SXSW 2025 Artist with his new band, The Never Not Now. For more information about his live performances and new music, visit Nakia.net.

Queer singer Sasami released the new album Blood on the Silver Screen
Also on Friday, Sasami dropped her new album that combines her classical conservatory-trained skills and stage persona to createan all-out pop record. “It’s about leaning into the chaos of romance and sweeping devotion—romanticism to the point of self-destruction,” she said in the album’s press release.
She was raised in Los Angeles in the “conservative religious cult” of the Unification Church. Blood is described as an extension of her process of coming into herself as part of a generation without obligation to conventions of love, sex race or the nuclear family.
“Being a woman of color, I’ve always felt this pressure or need to make something that’s mysterious or innovative, and always shied away from lightheartedness,” she added.
Sasami is also on tour in support of the album and will play in Dallas at the Deep Ellum Art. Co. on April 25.
