Lambda Legal and Washington Litigation Group on behalf of Gilbert Baker Foundation, Village Preservation and Equality New York won their case against the Trump Administration ensuring that the Pride flag is returned to the Stonewall National Monument.
In February, the Trump administration removed the Pride flag from Stonewall National Monument, the first national monument dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights and history. They called it “official policy.”
But official policy was nothing more than an illegal attempt to target and erase the LGBTQ+ community, community advocates said. And just eight days later, Lambda Legal sued with the argument that the government’s own policy exempts flags that provide historical context. The Pride flag at Stonewall does exactly that.
“The sudden, arbitrary and capricious removal of the Pride flag from the Stonewall National National Monument was yet another act by this administration to erase the LGBTQ+ community. Today, the government has pledged to restore thisimportant symbol back to where it belongs,” said Karen Loewy, senior council & director of constitutiona law practice, Lambda Legal.
