Austin police have arrested a suspect in the murder of a gay man who was killed after meeting someone at a bar on July 13.

Matthew Henry Bacon, 26, was arrested in West Monroe, La., on drug possession charges July 16. After questioning him about the death of 36-year-old David Villarreal, Austin police charged Bacon with first-degree murder.

KXAN.com is reporting Bacon was picked up after attempting to sell drugs at a West Monroe truck stop, according to an arrest affidavit. Police searched of his vehicle and found marijuana, several pills, rolling paper and other paraphernalia. As of Thursday, Bacon had not yet been extradited back to Austin.

Police released video footage last week of Villarreal and a man in his 20s or 30s entering Villarreal’s condo in the early hours of July 13 after witnesses saw them leave gay club Oilcan Harry’s together. Footage showed the man leaving the condos alone a few hours later.

Villarreal was later found dead in his condo on July 15 after a friend called police because he hadn’t heard from him.

Villarreal lived in Dallas before moving to Austin a few years ago.
