Point of Pride this week launched the Trans Health Survey, “a national, community-led research initiative created by and for trans people.” The survey is now live at TransHealthSurvey.org, giving trans people 18 and older across the U.S. the opportunity to “share their experiences and help shape the future of healthcare,” according to the press release announcing its launch.
Aydian Dowling, chief advancement officer and co-founder of Point of Pride, explained, “This survey is built by and for trans people, with the intention of creating a future where trans health is rooted in safety, access, joy and autonomy. We’re collecting meaningful, community-driven data that can directly inform future programs, policies, and systems of care.
“It’s time to put trans health in the hands of the people who live it.”
The Trans Health Survey aims to collect both quantitative and qualitative data to better understand the real, lived experiences of trans people navigating the U.S. healthcare system today, the press release notes, adding that the survey is “designed to uplift:”
• Positive experiences that foster greater access and better health outcomes
• Barriers to care, to help build more equitable and affirming systems
• Empowerment and education for both patients and providers
• Community-driven data, accountable to the people it represents
Point of Pride stresses that the survey is led by an all-trans and non-binary steering committee, along with outreach partners and peer non-profits that serve the trans and LGBTQ+ community.
“Together, this team brings deep lived experience and professional expertise; they include researchers, advocates, organizers, and care providers, all working to make sure the survey is inclusive, community-led, and truly reflective of the people it’s meant to serve,” the press release said.
Frederick Tran, a Dallas-based steering committee member for the Trans Health Survey and the communication and development manager for the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance, called the survey “a critical opportunity to shift the narrative around trans health — a narrative that has often been shaped by those who don’t live our experiences or understand our needs.
“By taking control of this conversation, we can advocate for healthcare systems that are inclusive, affirming, and truly reflective of our lived realities. This is our chance to reclaim our story and build a future where trans people thrive,” Tran added.
According to the press release, “With trans healthcare under constant scrutiny, and misinformation dominating political discourse, this survey is a powerful opportunity to take control of the narrative, and to help shape healthcare experiences that are competent, affirming and joyful.”
