The 36th Black Tie Dinner was held on Nov. 11 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel in downtown Dallas.
The program opened with a rousing number from Chicago.
The Rev. Eric Folkerth of Northaven United Methodist Church received the Raymond Kuchling Humanitarian Award.
Speakers included Tony Award-winning playwright Terrence McNally, accepting the Ally Award, and keynote speaker former Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning. Entertainers included Emily Koch, star of the touring company of Waitress, and Tyler Glenn, frontman for Neon Trees.
The new Richard Weaver Volunteer Excellence Award was presented posthumously to Brian Cross, and was accepted by his husband (me), and his mother, Margaret Austin. The Elizabeth Birch Equality Award was given to Edie Windsor, whose lawsuit resulted in parts of the Defense of Marriage Act being invalidated in 2013, setting the stage for the Obergefell marriage equality ruling two years later. Jim Obergefell introduced Windsor’s wife, Judith Kasen Windsor, who accepted the award.
