Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into US Masters Swimming “over potential violations of state law following reports that the organization allowed a male to compete in women’s events at the 2025 Spring Nationals swim meet held in San Antonio in April,” according to a press release today (Monday, May 19) from the Office of the Attorney General.
US Masters Swimming, which is a private, nonprofit membership organization, categorizes trans women, correctly, as women, and puts them in the women’s events for competition. Paxton, refusing to acknowledge actual science, insists trans women are men and spends thousands of dollars in public funds each year to legally questionable attacks on the LGBTQ community overall and transgender Texans specifically.
“The investigation will uncover documents related to US Masters Swimming and determine if the organization engaged in false, deceptive and misleading acts and practices,” the press release.
The press release quotes Paxton as saying, “The policy of US Masters Swimming, which allows men to compete in women’s events, is reprehensible and could violate Texas’ consumer protection laws. Not only is this policy insulting to female athletes, but it also demonstrates deep contempt for women and may violate Texas law.
“I will fight to stop these unfair policies and never back down from defending the integrity of women’s sports,” Paxton said.
Texas law does prohibit trans girls from competing in women’s sports in the state’s public schools, from pre-K through high school and in intercollegiate sports. But that law should not, presumably, hold sway over a private, nonprofit membership organization. So Paxton is apparently trying to twist consumer protection laws probihiting “misleading acts and practices” to attack US Masters Swimming, even though the organization’s policies and practices are public knowledge.
