Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today (Monday, March 17) announced the arrest of Maria Margarita Rojas, age 48 for “providing illegal abortions and illegally operating a network of clinics in the Northwest Houston area,” according to a press release from Paxton’s office. “Rojas, a midwife known as ‘Dr. Maria,’ was taken into custody in Waller County and charged with the illegal performance of an abortion, a second-degree felony, as well as practicing medicine without a license.”

The press release quoted Paxton as saying, “In Texas, life is sacred. I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn, defend our state’s pro-life laws, and work to ensure that unlicensed individuals endangering the lives of women by performing illegal abortions are fully prosecuted. Texas law protecting life is clear, and we will hold those who violate it accountable.”

This from the man who opposes common sense gun laws even in the wake of events such as the 2017 mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs that saw 27 dead and 22 wounded, the 2018 mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, that killed 10 and woulded 13; the 2019 mass shooting at an El Paso Walmart that killed 23 people and wounded 22 others, the 2022 mass shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School that killed 21 students and teachers and wounded 17 others.

This from the man fighting tooth and nail to keep transgender Texans, especially transgender youth in the state, from receiving the life-saving gender-affirming health care they need.

Apparently, for Paxton, only some lives are sacred and worth fighting for. He’ll “fight” for a fetus, but once you are born, you are on your own. Good luck.
