I got a notice that gay saxophonist Dave Koz will appear at the Academy of Country Music Awards, airing this Sunday, with… Toby Keith.
Keith, of course, if famously right-wing (even for country music), known for his jingois… — er, “patriotic” — songs and Republican-friendly politics, disgust with the Dixie Chicks and Fox News Channel appearances.
He’s also a smokin’ hot bear with a large following in the gay community.
Honestly, I think Keith has a mixed record, certainly not one I know of that’s patently anti-gay. But the pairing is still kinda odd. (It bears noting that the announcement came from Koz’s people, not Keith’s.)

Why is this even a problem? Toby Keith and Dave Koz were friends of Wayman Tisdale. Toby wrote “Crying for Me” as a tribute to his late friend and Dave Koz agreed to help cut that song on Toby’s “American Ride” cd along with other musical friends of Wayman Tisdale. This song is being performed on the ACMs to help benefit Stand Up To Cancer. I doubt if Mr. Tisdale would make these comparisons, so why should you? He would applaud both for doing this in his honor and smile that big smile of his.
Hey Celeste! I don’t think “odd” meant “bad” in this case…just…well… “odd”…I mean ya gotta give that a big ol good ol boy like Toby and a Smooth Jazz artist like Koz is a little “odd”…but yea it works…and I think that’s the point here…we aren’t all the same but we can all get along…
And Julie…I think Toby is registered as “Independent” these days…

Um … Annie, reason I hadn’t posted was because I had no idea who he was. However, looked him up. His family members were Democrats. He’s a Republican. He hates the Dixie Chicks and supported Obama.
LOL David! I guess I was sort of right when I asked if no one cared about Toby…hard to care about someone you don’t know anything about…and I think you got a few media blurbs there but not the heart of the man…he’s an artist whose music has sold more than 25 million albums in this decade alone, untold millions of concert tickets and formed the basis for an entertainment empire that includes movies, restaurants, a record label and more…And that’s just the “entertainment” dies of Toby’s businesses…He also owns and breeds race horses…has a land development company…and heavens knows what else he’s got going on cause that stuff doesn’t sell papers…BMI recently honored Keith for 50 million airplay performances of his songs, a figure that puts him in company with hit makers like Elton John, The Bee Gees and John Lennon…and then there’s Ally’s House…sort of a Ronald McDonald’s House for Oklahoma Kids (Toby’s home state and still home)…Toby will host his seventh annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic May 21-22 in Norman, Oklahoma, with proceeds again going to Ally’s House to assist severely ill children and their families..Toby has been distilled down to a few headline grabbing “facts”….I suppose it happen to anyone in the public eye…He really is quite a fascinating person whose story is one of belief in himself and hard work to get where he is today…and can you tell I kinda like him?
Okay, I’ll be honest, I didn’t get it, but now I do. Thank you, Annie, for explaining “odd” to me! I was trying to defend both of them, because even though they are an “odd” pairing the song is fantastic.
Well – I can say that I meant him prior to the release of his 2nd album – back in the day when he played out little hometown county fair – he was a dick then, and has become an even bigger one since – no use for him then, no use him now – I was a fan up until that show – when he basically told the entire crowd that if we didn’t like the way he was performing we could go F*CK ourselves….over half the people walked out…self included. And yes, I am male, a cub, and completely uninterested…
And that’s what I LOVE about this place we call “the world”…a person some people click with in an instant are seen to be dicks by others…I had the great pleasure of getting to spend some time with the early (read 1994-1995) Toby and one of his band members…Scott something…after a concert at a small county fair (hey! Maybe the same one you left, BDUB?!) cause my sister knew the producer of the show…anyway…I had a blast…they were both as sweet as can be and SO FUNNY my face hurt from laughing by the end of the night! I’ve been a fan ever since. I do have to admit that Toby’s belief in himself and his way of doing things could be taken to be a negative by some…but I personally LOVE IT and him! I’ll “take one for the team” any day…’sides Toby wouldn’t be too interested in you…not his thing as it were…so it’s kinda good that you are “completely uninterested” in Toby!
@ Annie – well that’s goo – because you can have him all to your self…and even if it WERE his “thing” I still wouldn’t be interested – I don’t go for big ugly guys. And the concert I was at was circa 1997. A bunch of were slated to help his road crew and were supposed to get to hang out with them, but after that episode – no one bothered. To each their own though, and I am glad that you had a good time with him – I know every situation is different – he could of just been having a bad night. I don’t base my opinion on anything other than that one night – I am a “one chance” kind of person.

Toby did a remake of Barry White’s song NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP on Wayman’s REBOUND CD. Toby loves a lot of different music, he can sing anything, what’s wrong with that? I like it when different genre’s get together and jam. You Rock Toby and he DEFINITELY IS A BIG OLE BEAR, Looking better now than he did when he was younger.
Toby is a REGISTERED DEMOCRAT, watch his biography show and see what you are talking about before you open your mouth.
He is also married with 3 wonderful children and a granddaughter.
As far as the Dixie Chicks they brought it on their demise, Toby had nothing to do what that, he doesn’t have that much power.
