Northaven Trail to connect to DART and other trails

A major expansion of the first east-west hike and bike trail in Dallas will get underway soon.
According to Erin Moore, who works on trails for County Commissioner Theresa Daniel, they’re working on funding now. The city matches any money the county puts up and TxDOT also contributes.
The Katy Trail and White Rock Trail go north and south. The Northaven Trail is an east-west trail through North Dallas that will connect Walnut Hill Station on the Green Line at Denton Drive to Forest Lane Station near Central Expressway on the Red and Orange lines, a distance of more than eight miles.
Currently, the Northaven Trail is a little more than two miles long and runs from Freda Stern Drive, a short street off Royal Lane at the Jewish Community Center, to Preston Road.
The western expansion will continue across Preston Road and through the south side of Northaven United Methodist Church’s parking lot and run west under Oncor power lines right-of-way south of Northaven Road. The route makes a sharp turn south on the west side of Marsh Lane somewhere in the Disney streets, according to Moore, and west again north of Walnut Hill Road to connect with DART.
On the east side, Moore said, plans are for the trail to cross over Central Expressway on a signature pedestrian bridge and connect with the station at Forest Lane. Eventually, five trails will meet at this point. A branch of White Rock Trail already connects to the station. That will allow bike riders to go from Walnut Hill Road and Denton Drive down to White Rock Lake without riding on streets.
