A male-to-female transgender student at North Dallas High School says the school’s principal is discriminating against her by barring her from running for homecoming queen, according to a report that aired Wednesday night on Fox 4.
Andy Moreno, an 18-year-old senior, told the station that some friends nominated her for homecoming queen. However, a few days ago, a counselor warned Moreno that some school administrators were opposed to the idea. Moreno says she went to talk to the principal, who told her to run for homecoming king instead.
The Dallas Independent School District says it has no formal policy on the issue, but DISD issued a statement saying: “The district fully supports the decision of the principal at North Dallas High School. It should be noted that the Dallas Independent School District is proud to have one of the most aggressive anti-harassment policies among school districts in the state of Texas.”
Moreno says she doesn’t feel comfortable running for homecoming king because she identifies as a female, and her friends support her.
“I do feel like I’m being harassed and I feel like I’m being discriminated against,” Moreno told Fox 4. “I feel like the principal is embarrassed to have a transgender queen.”

Hey more power to you I think you should run for Queen. I’m a senior in the same boat although I wasn’t nominated I know your pain. The school here caused me a lot of trouble too for identifying as a girl so I wish you the best of luck and I bet you deserve it more than any of those other girls! Be strong thats all we can do these days.
It does not matter what is in your pants. What matters is if you are attractive or not. I’m fed up with people having to make a deal about this before the actual event. Just show up and deal with it then.

I believe if you fit the requirements, all is well. Really it would be up to the students because they are the voters, not the faculty. They should be looking at the person, not the gender, because the lines may blurred where that is concerned.
Excluding someone from a school activity based on gender is discrimination. Ms Moreno keep up the fight, you are not alone.

This is a textbook case on how the new generation is accepting while the older, crusty generation is still spewing their prejudices and close-mindedness on their kids, in this case, the DISD administration.
Yes, they’ve said they will be okay with whatever decision the principal makes but I guarantee you the principal is being pressured to cave in.
I called it years ago with my short film MY APOLOGY TO DISD, when they took away a teaching job from me because they found out I had made gay themed films.

I wish Andy all the best – I’m very impressed with this 18 year old – beautiful and strong – wow! And i agree that the younger generation is more accepting; but even so its disheartening to read about the recent rash of bullying and suicides by young people. I want Andy to know that no matter how this turns out, there are a lot of people who support her 100%.
Miss Moreno is an articulate and beautiful young woman. I sincerely hope that her principal will reconsider this decision. If Andy was elected by her peers, then there is no reason to deny her the opportunity to run. Good luck, Andy!!!!
If your a legal male then you run for King, if your a legal female your run for Queen. When he completes a full operation and is then female, then he can run for Queen. I dont believe that is the case here. I am a gay male……..I get it, but understand there has to be some parameters in life for everything or else anarchy sets in. He needs to Buck-up.
Acceptance and Tolerance is one thing…but bending all the rules to accomodate an individual’s personal choices is quite another thing….and that is not discrimination! I used to work for a college and a pre-op transgender male was allowed to use the women’s restrooms instead of the men’s. What about the rights of all the women who were put in awkward positions and who felt uncomfortable because the person in the stall next to them’s feet were facing the wrong ? …and this was a 40+ year old man who wore halter tops, daisy dukes, and something that resembled a floor mop on his head….oh yeah and he really needed a shave! He was also given an apartment through student housing all to himself/herself when all the other students had 4 people to a two bdrm…so the school had to layout the difference in his/her rent. You all worry so much about the rights of the person who wants to dance to a different drum, that you totally ignore everything and everyone else. If society keeps on it’s current path of this politically correct freefall, in another 10-20 years then murderers, rapists, and pedophiles will all be getting this same kind of sympathy and support because they can’t help how they feel inside either. Wake up world!

Time to organize a write-in campaign and let the students send a clear messgae to the old, backwards administration that their discrimination will simply be shown as nothing more than ignorance. Like a dam built by humans on a river, mother nature does not care and ultimately, without fail a flood or floods will happen that the dam cannot control.

lets all do what we can to help Ms. Moreno to become Queen. It will be a great step in the right direction and it will help those who are ignorent, scared or just stuck in our ancient past. The more we bring our discrimination to more people it will be easier for us all.(Not just for the GLBT)
Power to Andy for standing up for her rights; I wish her the best even if she loses this round with her school. The focus on transgender discrimination is growing, which can only be a step in the right direction, no one deserves to be treated differently based upon something that they were born with!
I used to hold the same opinions as the school, I used to honestly believe that a penis made a male and a vagina made a female. I was fine with gays and lesbians but thought that thinking of yourself as a gender different from your sex was wrong…my eyes got opened though, and many people won’t believe this, by going to church. My preacher was reading Galatians one day and the passage about god seeing neither -man nor woman- hit me. Our bodies are just bodies. Our souls are what should be important. And Andy’s soul is all beautiful, intelligent female.
That said, she’s also attractive; and isn’t that what being homecoming queen is all about in the first place? Political opinions never got in the way when the homecoming queen at my school got drunk off her feet; or when another school’s queen became known to have had an illegal abortion. I don’t see why an M on the queen’s birth certificate should matter so much.
Classifying a person as a gender against their will and limiting their rights on that basis is a crime. It may not be on the books, but its a criminal violation of inalienable human rights.
I can see the issues from both sides but I do feel that Andy is very much in the right – if students are voting for her to be homecoming queen, why should the administration have an issue? I could understand if there was an public outcry but no-one seems to care except the older generation.
It’ll be interesting to see if she gets many votes – even if its on the homecoming court, that would rock.

I feel story for kids. Going through this right now. What’s sad is that in a decade or less this won’t be a big deal, but for now these are the kids who are in frontline being brave and strong for those that follow.

Facts are Andy has been transitioning since her junior year. DISD has a non discrimination policy and no policy in place that says a trans student can’t run for homecoming queen (or king if they are transmale) ‘they are clearly violating.
And finally, homecoming elections are about the student body. If they saw fit to nominate Andy and want her to represent North Dallas HS, then why are the adults who have long since passed their HS school days tripping about it?

Everyone is so worried about offending a minority, what about the majority? Although there are no rules expressly forbidding a boy from being homecoming queen the Homecoming King has a reasonable expectation that his queen will be a girl. Why are you talking about her grades anyway? It seems highly unethical coming from a “teacher.” I’d be careful before someone starts talking about you.
Last night was parent conference night at North Dallas high school. For the first time in so many years and as far as I can remember on parent conference night, the auditorium was packed with about 500 parents, students and teachers. Principal Escanilla spoke about her vision for the school, her expectations from parents and students, and her responsibilities as principal. She handed awards for student honor roll.
No one dared to ask questions about this HCQ issue. No one. Not one parent made a scene. Some colleges and universities were present to recruit seniors, like a mini college fair. Tutoring services setup tables. Community partners and the church served snacks and food to parents and some parents brought food to share with other parents. Parents enjoyed the night talking with the teachers and the administration. It was a beautiful evening at NDHS.
It did not make the headline. There was no media coverage. When good things are happening at our schools, media does not and will not celebrate.
Andy is a beautiful woman and should be allowed to run for Queen. Its good to see someone her age realize who she is and follow her dreams. God bless her and her family.

I think that if you were in a similiar situation how would you want it to be treated? We often forget what are parents taught us put your feet in the other persons shoes!! The votes were in last night. The other queer guy Ignacio who run for king to be Andy’s partner did not win as king. The seniors at North Dallas High School voted a straight boy for homecoming king and a straight girl as homecoming queen. Andy did not make the nomination, therefore he was not eligible to run for HCQ. If we did not vote for Ignacio as King, why did queer Andy think that he is more popular than the other girls who were nominated for HCQ? He said so many lies to the media you should know by now people.
