Newt wants to be President. He’s been out there giving speeches and working the circuit. And, you remember, he was one of the first right-wingers to condemn the Prop. 8 decision, which was a blatant display of hypocrisy given his three marriages.
Newt seems to think that won’t matter according to one of his ex-wives, Marianne. She relayed to Esquire her conversation with Newt after she found out about his ongoing affair:
He asked her to just tolerate the affair, an offer she refused.
He’d just returned from Erie, Pennsylvania, where he’d given a speech full of high sentiments about compassion and family values.
The next night, they sat talking out on their back patio in Georgia. She said, “How do you give that speech and do what you’re doing?”
“It doesn’t matter what I do,” he answered. “People need to hear what I have to say. There’s no one else who can say what I can say. It doesn’t matter what I live.”
But, apparently, it does.
Over the weekend, GOP Senator Tom Coburn declared would he wouldn’t support Newt because of of marital history :
Gingrich “is a super-smart man, but he doesn’t know anything about commitment to marriage,” he said of the thrice-married former House speaker. “He’s the last person I’d vote for for president of the United States. His life indicates he does not have a commitment to the character traits necessary to be a great president.”
I don’t often agree with Tom Coburn, but I’d surely agree with him about Newt’s lack of character.
