New York is a fun place to visit, even if you only have
a few rushed days
There never seems to be enough time to do everything you want to do or see all the people you intend to see in New York City. But that doesn’t mean you can’t try.

You can’t be Midtown for access to, well, everything, so we holed up at the Algonquin Hotel on W. 44th. More than a hotel, the Algonquin is an important part of the city’s history — the site of the famed Algonquin Round Table where writers, including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood would lunch and bitch.
Many of the Algonquin writers contributed to Vanity Fair, so it was fitting to stay in the Vanity Fair suite, where covers of past issues accented the heavenly king bed and other comforts. A stuffed animal cat sitting near the couch was a replica of Matilda, the Algonquin’s resident feline that roams the lobby. Not only are toys made in her likeness, she also has business cards and an e-mail address.
A 10 minute cab ride from Midtown and we were in Chelsea, New York’s most prominent gayborhood. We dined at Cafeteria, a 24-hour joint that’s a great place to grab a drink or eat a great meal. From seared yellow fin tuna to chicken and waffles, there’s something for every taste. Most of the waiters and patrons are gay, so it’s also a great place to check out the Chelsea boys.
Next came G Lounge, a still-popular but small spot that offers yummy cocktails, hot dancers and pulsing music. If you’re looking for a quiet place to catch up with friends, this isn’t it.
After window shopping along Fifth Avenue and strolling through Central Park, it was time to head to Splash. At 7 p.m., the crowd’s not too big, but it gets busier later in the evening. We only stayed until about 10, because the next day we had to get up early. At about 5 a.m., we hoofed it to Rockefeller Center for a chance to be seen on The Today Show. People start arriving around 5:30 for the chance to be seen on TV.
We rested up before heading over to the recently-opened sports bar Boxer NYC, which is already popular with locals and out-of-towners. For jocks and those who love ’em, it’s a nice capper to a whirlwind trip to the Big Apple.
