Oak Lawn Committee members hope to find driver in hit-and-run accident, get compensation for repairs

Members of the Oak Lawn Committtee want to know who ran into their Legacy of Love monument at Oak Lawn Avenue and Cedar Springs Road on June 22, causing an estimated $1,500 in damage.
Committee President Michael Milliken said a vehicle jumped the curb shortly after 10 a.m. and struck one of the 2-by-2-foot-wide, 3-foot-tall brick monument stands.
The driver of the vehicle pulled into the nearby Walgreen’s parking lot and called 911 but had the vehicle towed before authorities arrived, Milliken said.
“It’s amazing that this vehicle could hit that and still survive because it’s a pretty substantial piece of brick,” Milliken said. “It must have done some significant damage.”
Milliken said the committee has insurance covering the $225,000 monument, dedicated in October 2006. However, he would prefer see the driver of the vehicle come forward.
“Hopefully they have insurance and they can pay for it,” he said. “We’d prefer that they pay for it because that could result in higher premiums for us.”
