Rick Welts, 73, the out CEO of the Dallas Mavericks will retire on Dec. 31, the team announced on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Mavs president Ethan Casson will succeed him.

Welts has been CEO since 2024 when he agreed to serve in the position for two years.

His impact on the team may be best remembered for the plan to move the team from the American Airlines Center to North Dallas. The Mavs are currently planning to build a new arena at the former Valley View Mall on Preston Road at LBJ Freeway. The team hopes it will be ready for the 2031 season, when the team’s lease expires at the American Airlines Center.
