On June 28, a gunman walked into the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Md., and began shooting. Here’s a list of the victims with descriptions from the front page of today’s issue of the Capital Gazette:

Rob Hiaasen: A joyful stylist, a generous mentor

Gerald Fischman: Clever and quirky voice of a community newspaper

John McNamara: Sports reporting was his dream job

Wendi Winters: A prolific writer who chronicled her community

Rebecca Smith: Recent hire loved spending time with family

In response to the shootings, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson issued this statement:

It is deeply disheartening that in our nation, once again, innocent lives are lost to senseless gun violence. As someone who has seen this kind of tragedy strike my own community, we must all send our support to the community in Annapolis and commit to doing everything in our power to prevent another shooting from occurring. I remain frustrated that because Republicans in Congress continue to block all of the many meaningful reforms Democrats have proposed, we can do nothing more than send our thoughts and prayers to the victims and their families. I stand firm in my pledge to work with my colleagues to pass legislation that will prevent gun violence and save lives.

The congresswoman said exactly what we believe and said it in a way that way much more polite than we could have been. While Trump sent his asinine “thoughts and prayers,” we share the anger of Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance President Patti Fink who pointed a finger directly at Trump for inciting violence in this post from her Facebook page:

Three days ago, our so-called “president” told a rally of his nonthinking supporters in South Carolina that “these are the enemy of the people” while pointing to the press corps covering the event. His record of inciting violence is legendary. No surprise that neo-Nazi white supremacist Milo whatshisname has been doing the same thing….and SURPRISE! A white male went & did exactly as he was advised by the so-called “President of the United States” and like-minded lunatic bigots on the far right. When will Republicans OWN their words & actions?!?? Party of “personal responsibility”?!? BULLSHIT.

Thank GOD for the American free press and its First Amendment protections in the United States Constitution. To this so-called “president” and the mindless unthinking lemmings who look to him for how to think about everything, you constantly speak against OUR CONSTITUTION when you vilify our free press –> you’re TRAITORS to our democracy. PERIOD.

The right to own guns is guaranteed by the Second Amendment, but a free press is guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution. Journalism was so important to the founders of our country that it’s the only profession specifically protected by the Constitution. At Dallas Voice, along with EVERY newspaper and EVERY journalist in this country, we believe those who were murdered yesterday died upholding our democracy.
