Gay LULAC chapter elects officers
LULAC 4871—The Dallas Rainbow Council has elected its new officers for 2012.
Raul Hinojosa Jr. was chosen to serve as the group’s fifth president succeeding John Trevino Jr. Hinojosa has served as an at-large board member, and has also held leadership posts with GLSEN Dallas and the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance. The new board will be sworn in at an Officer Installation Ceremony and
Monthly Meeting on Thursday, April 19, at 6:30 p.m. at Havana Bar & Grill, 4006 Cedar Springs Road. Mayor Pro-Tem Pauline Medrano will be the special guest.
“It is a tremendous honor to serve as president of the nation’s first LGBT LULAC Council,” Hinojosa said. “We must continue to advocate for the rights of the LGBT and Latino communities at all levels. This board and I are committed to this cause at the local, state, and federal level.”
In addition to Hinojosa Jr., the officers elected at the March 15 meeting were: Jesse Tafalla Jr., vice president; Juan C. Contreras, vice president of youth; Felix
Arrieta, secretary; Bernice Gonzalez, treasurer; Patricia Mancha, chaplain; Elias Cantu, sergeant-at-arms; and John Trevino Jr., parliamentarian. In addition, three individuals have been appointed as at-large board members: Sean Lozano, Melinda Rios and Arturo Rivas. Bloomin’ Ball set for May 5
AIDS Interfaith Network presents the sixth Bloomin’ Ball in the Grand Ballroom of the Hilton Anatole Hotel at 6 p.m. on May 5.
The opening reception includes a drinks and a silent auction surrounded by spring flowers and live music. The evening continues with a seated three-course dinner with live entertainment, a live auction and the Crystal Hope Awards. Andy Smith is this year’s individual award winner. First United Methodist Church wins this year’s faith-based award. Sterling’s Bookkeeping and Tax Service is the business winner. Sam Bowers and Glenn Romero are the event chairs. HRC Families to celebrate Earth Day
HRC Family Project will hold its first social event of the year Earth Day in Oak Cliff on April 21 at noon.
LGBT families and allies will meet at the rocket ship in the playground in Lake Cliff Park. Bring a picnic lunch. After lunch, the group will walk to the Earth Day celebration. Lots of LGBT and LGBT-friendly exhibitors will participate in Earth Day including AIDS Arms, the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League along with some of neighborhood associations, Oak Cliff garden clubs and a number of animal rescue groups. Hunky’s and Spiral Diner will serve food.
