Speaker of the House Joe Straus adjourned the House of Representatives a day early, ending the special session of the legislature with no bathroom bill passing.
The discriminatory bill passed the Senate, but wasn’t considered by the House committee where it was sent. The chairman of the committee said he saw no reason to consider the bill. Straus said he didn’t want the death of one person to be on his head because of passage of anti-trans legislation.
Property tax reform also failed to make it through the House.
Several bills did make it through the special session. A trees bill passed, but the version that passed is not what Abbott wanted. Instead, it was similar to a version Abbott vetoed during the regular session. Another bill awaiting Abbott’s signature is one restricting the right of cities in large counties to annex unincorporated territory.
Abbott hasn’t ruled out another special session, however the cost is $1 million per session called.
