Paul Broussard
A year after he was set to be released from prison only to have the decision reversed, Jon Buice is again up for parole in the 1991 murder of gay Houston banker Paul Broussard, according to Equality Texas.
The statewide LGBT advocacy group is encouraging people to contact the Board of Pardons and Paroles and urge them to keep Buice behind bars.
Buice was sentenced in 1992 to 45 years in prison for the murder of Broussard, who was brutally attacked in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood by 10 young men from The Woodlands who allegedly set out that night to “beat up some queers.”
While all 10 were convicted, only Buice — the knife man who inflicted the fatal wound — remains in prison.
Last July, the parole board approved Buice for release in October 2011, but reversed its decision a month later in response to undisclosed “new information.” The parole board’s reversal came in the wake of an advocacy campaign by the LGBT community, which included letters from Rep. Garnet Coleman and Sen. John Whitmire, both Democrats from Houston.
Broussard’s mother, Nancy Rodriguez, has said she feel Buice should serve a minimum of 27 years — Broussard’s age at the time of his death.
