Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn thinks it’s a disgrace that gay servicemembers will no longer have to lie about who they are. Cornyn, perhaps best known to the LGBT community for equating us to “box turtles,” further cemented his legacy as an anti-gay bigot when he twice voted against repealing “don’t ask don’t tell” today — then released the below statement calling the measure’s passage “a disgrace.” If there was ever any doubt that Cornyn was blatantly pandering when he accepted an award from Log Cabin Republicans earlier this year, it was thoroughly erased today. This man is not, nor will he ever be, our friend. Here’s his statement:
“With three of the four military service chiefs expressing clear reservations over the proposed repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, today’s vote shows blatant disregard for the opinions of those who know our military best. With our troops engaged in combat overseas, now is not the time to increase the level of stress on our Armed Forces through such a dramatic policy change. It is a disgrace that this latest item from the liberal legislative wish-list is being jammed through at the expense of military readiness.”
For the record, Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison also twice voted against DADT repeal today. Here’s her statement:
“After speaking with military personnel and former leaders of our armed services, I remain very concerned about how repealing this policy could negatively impact unit cohesion and overall troop readiness – especially during a time of war. Therefore, I did not support a repeal of the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy.”
Of course, this again begs the question, “What were the Log Cabin Republicans thinking giving this man an award?!?”
Why do liberals always think that conservatives don’t have a right to their opinion? Liberals are the most intolerant bunch, unless it pertains to something indecent, in which case they always welcome perversion with open arms.
Once again, USA trails behind. Already, thirty-eight nations allow service members to serve open: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, Bermuda, and Uruguay. We trail behind most of the above nations in education. Today, the “dumb American” title goes to the 33 GOP senators.
Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn is a coward. The Senate republicans vote on the first responders bill showed the true nature of Republican Senators. They voted patronage over patriotism.
Give money to the rich, before giving money to the first responders — true heroes of our country.
In DADT they prefer there own bigoted view over the safety of our country. I have no doubt that losing qualified linguists had a very good chance of killing members of our armed forces. We don’t have enough people that speak the languages, so I am sure there are important reports that were not read that could have easily led to injury or death.
We have 150,000 troops in Afghanistan, over the years we have let 14,000 qualified people go. That is nearly 10%. Just plain stupid.
The republicans stance is “we don’t like it.” That is the sum total of their argument. It keeps qualified patriots out of the military at a time we need every person, man or woman, brave enough to serve.
It is amazing to me how the Senators discounted integrity. When I served honor, duty and integrity were important. DADT at it’s core is a lie. I guess the senators preferred that people lie. Perhaps it is because the senators live in a world where integrity, honor and duty do not matter.
I am ex military and I am a conservative and I salute each and every person who serves. Duty, Honor, Country. Nothing else matters. If I were back in the military, I would take any qualified gay or lesbian solder over any of the 42 republican senators who have proven to be weak kneed, hypocrites. I want someone who would protect my back not stab it like the senators have done with the first responders.
It is amazing how far republicans have fallen. When I first voted republican, it was because I thought the democrats were up in the night and held positions not backed by facts. Today’s republicans have their heads so firmly buried in the sand I have little hope they can pull them out even if they wanted to.
Tom, of course conservatives have a right to their opinions. But when they publish their opinions and claim to be speaking for our community, and their published ‘opinions’ are contradicted by reality over and over again, liberals reserve the right to call them on it.
Today the Republicans killed the “Dream” act. Republicans hate immigrants and Mexicans in particular. To all Hispanics: please remember that the Republicans are your enemy the next time you have the chance to vote. Mark Montgomery NYC, NY boboberg@nyc.rr.com
It is a sad, sad day when the most filthy, vile, licentious, and perverted acts of sexual immorality are considered “acceptable”. It is even more disturbing when these filthy acts are embraced by the so-called “leaders” of our country. Make no mistake, this is the beginning of the end! Rome was destroyed for its perversion. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for their perversion. And now the U.S. stands at the brink of destruction.
Be warned.
Tom, conservatives have a right to their opinion like everyone. It’s when that opinion becomes law and it prevents others from exercising *their* “opinion” that it becomes an issue. Be a bigot all you want, just don’t pass laws that make bigotry legal.
Thanks for the laugh Hahncho! Out trolling the gay sites looking for hookup again with a Sodomite?
3230 sexual assaults reported last year in the military and that doesn’t count the possible thousands not reported. The majority of them man on woman assaults. When 70 percent of the population supports the repeal then evidently the Republicans are NOT representing their constituents. Both Texas Senators have been in office too damn long and need to go. They are bigoted, hateful, and only care about themselves and those funding their campaigns.
You call conservatives bigots. That could not be farther from the truth. Conservative Republicans have done more for equal rights than Democrats have ever thought about doing. Read your history books. We were founded on biblical ideas and should conduct ourselves in that manner. Some of my best friends are Hispanics, but that does not mean that I want them to break our immigration laws. You probably would call me hateful because I am pro life, but it is the pro death people who are supporting murder of innocent children. So who sounds more hateful? I’ve never killed a child. I’ve never supported killing a child, but my guess is that many of you who are spewing lies about conservatives actually support the pro death idea.
@TomCryar 12.19.2010 05:29PM
>We were founded on biblical ideas and should conduct ourselves in that manner.
YOU MEAN IDEALS LIKE THESE???:
Exodus 35:2
Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a holy sabbath of solemn rest to Yahveh; whoever does any work onit shall be put to death
Ecclesiastes 7:26
“And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.”
(I Corinthians 14:34-35)
“Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”
tom sweetie, why are you here? are you trolling for attention? or are you just hoping someone will give you a deep dicking?
You guys are proving my point about liberals. Thank you very much. You are the ones full of hate. Let the hate go. Stop letting it control you and I promise you will be happier.
honey, i’m not full of hate. i’m just sick of bullies butting in to my life and telling me how i should live it. i’m sick to death of so called “christians” telling me how i’m an abomination, yet not living what christ taught. and not living by the rest of the old testament. and ignoring the rest of the levitical laws. and picking and choosing which passages to carry out in their daily lives. how do you personally justify that?
you have a right to your opinion, much the same way i have the right to mine and i would fight for both of our rights to my dying day.
but how would you feel if your “opinion” (being who you are) could get you fired from your job? beat up at school? denied the ability to serve in the military? kicked out of your home? excommunicated from your church? how about spending years and lots of money going through therapy to change who you are at the behest of your church so-called-family only to find out that your “christian” therapist is molesting his clients? or going through exorcisms trying to rid yourself of the gay demon only to be cut off from your church when you start asking the question “is this necessary?”
but let’s get back to the issue at hand here….which is the double standard that john cornyn lives by, no wonder he wants gay service men and women to lie about their orientation in order to stay in a job they love! he accepts awards from the log cabin republicans (which btw, i’m appalled that they would award him anything. can someone explain what that was all about?) and then votes against his gay supporters every chance he gets. this man is a career politician at it’s worst and should be put out by the curb with yesterday’s garbage.
in a later post you go on and on about how you have never killed a child. well, we finally have something in common! but i do find it curious that the religious dogma that goes around telling lgbt kids that they are terrible and sinners and abominations drive so many to suicide. so let’s just call that issue a wash. your side encourages kids to kill themselves and my side believes in pro choice, which you so glibly refer to as pro death.
finally don’t confuse snarkiness for hate. i don’t hate my christian friends. or my christian parents. i disagree with them on many issues but i don’t hate them. i will say that from personal experience that conservatives and christians that hang out on this site condemning us horrible sinners typically have an ulterior motive. and it usually involves wanting to suck a cock so badly that they will do anything to justify their continued frequenting of lgbt sites.
This guy is a great man and his ideals are excellent. This article is a flatout lie and is terrible
Go John Don’t Listen to these idiots
Please give us evidence of what a great man he is, ’cause the gay community hasn’t seen that side of him.
Mr. Cryar – Conservatives are certainly entitled to their opinions – but what they are NOT entitled to are the FACTS ! It’s the opinions that conservatives try to “spin” as facts is what we liberals have a problem with. For example – Mr. Cryar states the following: “Conservative Republicans have done more for equal rights than Democrats have ever thought about doing. Read your history books. We were founded on biblical ideas and should conduct ourselves in that manner. ” WRONG. Plain and simply WRONG. Conservative Republicans have fought every form of progressive reform since time immemorial. They were against Women getting the Vote, they were against the right or workers to Unionize, they fought against the 8 hour workday, they were (are) against any form of regulation to protect the public over the interests of private business, they were (are) against equal pay for equal work, they were (are) against health care for every citizen, they were (are) against equal rights for GLBT citizens – which they constantly refer to as “special” rights….the list goes on and on. Mr. Cryar is also wrong on the 2nd point. The American Founding Fathers were in fact “DEISTS” not “Christians” per se. It is YOU who need to revisit those history books. In spite of right-wing Christian attempts to rewrite history to make Jefferson into a Christian, little about his philosophy resembles that of Christianity. Although Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence wrote of the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God, there exists nothing in the Declaration about Christianity.
Although Jefferson believed in a Creator, his concept of it resembled that of the god of deism (the term “Nature’s God” used by deists of the time). With his scientific bent, Jefferson sought to organize his thoughts on religion. He rejected the superstitions and mysticism of Christianity and even went so far as to edit the gospels, removing the miracles and mysticism of Jesus (see The Jefferson Bible) leaving only what he deemed the correct moral philosophy of Jesus. The grave of Thomas Jefferson is not marked with a Crucifix – but an Obelisk ! Nice try Mr. Cryar, you certainly are entitled to your opinions but dear sir, you are NOT entitled to the FACTS.
It’s a war. We’re on the same side. I want my freedoms as much as you do. Why is that so hard to comprehend?
Nesbitt really brings out what is in a liberal’s heart. The
bitterness oozes out in his attitude. What do you want? You are
completely free to be queer. That doesn’t mean that everyone else
has to embrace it. I really could not care less how you live, so
don’t blame me for all your sorrow. Everyone struggles with
relationships with family and friends. That is your problem to deal
with (probably not something to air out in public). And your crude
statements about sexual acts are not really appropriate either.
That is probably why your are having problems with your church and
family. You guys are always looking for a way to get in other
people’s face and then you wonder why they rebuke you. Your
attitude is the problem. Think about it. Cerebral, I do
have the facts on my side. And most of the things you bring up are
not equal rights. So, we would be arguing apples against oranges.
First of all, I am a business owner, and I have no responsibility
to allow my employees to unionize. I will always hire the best guy
for the best price, just like you do when you shop for a
product. You buy the best item for the best price. What protection
do you need against private business? If you are valuable, then you
will be rewarded. Why should unskilled people be rewarded as if
they are skilled? That doesn’t make sense, of course, unless you
are one of those unskilled people. Liberals will hopefully grow up
one day and stop holding their hand out trying to profit off of
others’ accomplishments. But, I don’t hold out much hope. You will
continue to put more energy into squeezing the successful instead
of becoming successful yourself. That’s why most liberals will
continue to be losers and go on complaining about what they
deserve. Stop being lazy. Get educated, get trained, do whatever
you need to do to be a better person, and you will be rewarded.
Stop asking for handouts. You only deserve what you can make for
yourself. Nothing else. This will be my last
post. If I have enlightened just one person, this will have been
worth sharing this depth of wisdom.
oh no! i’ve pissed off another conservative and now
he’ll take his toys and go home.
Tom Cryar, about whom do you fantasize when fingering yourself? Cheney? Rove? Shrub? Cronyn the assfuck?
@Hahncho: this is indeed the beginning of the end. I heard the same thing was said when slavery was abolished. And likewise when women were given the right to vote. And of course the same when the interracial marriage ban was repealed. In each of these cases, the predictions of doom and gloom were prevalent. And the doom and gloom never happened, just like it’s not going to happen this time. Sorry to disappoint you, but we the people are continuously evolving. You don’t have to follow, though. You’re welcome to continue living in your own little fantasy world.
