Queer LiberAction, the Dallas-based direct action group, plans another one of its Queer Kiss-In’s on Saturday — this time in the Fort Worth Stockyards, which QL called “a very socially conservative area of the city” in a press release sent out yesterday. NBC 5, which posted a story about the event on its Web site this morning, interviewed Hub Baker, the longtime manager of the Cowtown Coliseum rodeo in the Stockyards, who “doesn’t exactly welcome the demonstration,” according to the TV station.
“My first thought is, in the Fort Worth Stockyards, we like to welcome anyone and everyone, and we don’t discriminate,” he said.
But he added that he has a problem with anyone kissing in public — gay or straight.
“Manners are manners,” he said. “If they don’t act right among cowboys, maybe they need to get a good whipping.”
I’m sure Baker will claim this remark was taken out of context, but I’m also pretty sure he will live to regret it. Stay tuned.
OMG!
That sounds so freaking HOT.
Note to self….pick up extra bottle of RUSH this weekend.
I’ll take him at his word. I’d love to see him carry out his threat – giving a whipping to a straight couple because they kissed in public. Not going to happen. Not what he really meant. But let’s see if we can hold him to his stupid remarks.
The Fort Worth Stockyards has plenty of straight couples holding hands and kissing all the time, especially at night when the bars are open. The Fort Worth rodeo even has a sweethart segment on Valentine’s where couples are told to kiss! So, I find it really strange that the head of the rodeo says that public kissing is bad manners.
If the rodeo manager worked for a company and made those comments, he would be fired. He’s a city employee, and the city has an anti-discrimination ordinance, so he should be fired.
I’m still laughing at Joel Burns’ comments.
First of all, Joel’s claim that he kisses every day. Obviously, Joel and his partner don’t kiss in public in Sundance Square, much less the Stockyards. For anyone who’s ever done it, just holding a rainbow flag in Sundance Square is enough to get you insults, threats, and obscene gestures. One can imagine what kissing there or in the Stockyards will yield.
Secondly, Joel Burns pulled a no show at the Fort Worth / Tarrant County Pride Parade. That’s simply ridiculous for our only LGBT elected official in Fort Worth to pull a no show at the Pride Parade. It shows he’s only looking out for the political self interest throwing the LGBT community under the bus.
I’m still curious as to why the Dallas Voice didn’t call him out on this? The Dallas Voice called out Dallas elected officials who didn’t attend Dallas Pride. So, why not call out Fort Worth officials who didn’t attend Fort Worth Pride?
Possibly, he had a good, legitimate excuse, such as a family emergency. But if that were the case, he should have notified the parade committee and had them announce it along with his proxy message of support. Several members of the parade committee were rightfully disgusted with his no show without a phone call to cancel.
Seriously? I read his comment completely differently. I felt it was comedic and tongue in cheek. I really don’t agree that he was inciting violence. Saying that is stirring up trouble. I think we need to have a sense of humor.
Perhaps we should send the Leather Corp after him for a good whippin’! hehe
DUH. I think any rational person could deduce that it was taken out of context.
I recieved this comment on a blog this morning:
I would give anything to round up these troublemaking homers, take them to a private room where no one can hear them, then make them strip naked and tie them up. I would then get a freshly oiled whip and start whipping them across their backs until welts form blood slowly oozes. I would make them orally declare me (and Jesus) their masters.”
Tounge and cheek? Have a sense of humor? Come on folks. If it was directed at any other group, I highly doubt these comments would be taken lightly. The above quote is from some crazed religious loon. Thanks to Mr. Baker’s comment these crazies are coming out of the woodwork.
All part of “THE Fort Worth Way”…
Baker will never regret it, as the city will cover for him and sweep it under the run like they do everything else homophobic in Fort Worth.
BTW, the Landover Baptist Church who posted those items is not a real church. It’s a parody site. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landover_Baptist_Church
(not that that makes the comments okay….)
