Ever since Kay Bailey Hutchison was whalloped in the Republican gubernatorial primary by Rick Perry, some have been holding out hope that our senior U.S. senator might get better on LGBT issues. After all, Hutchison may be eyeing retirement instead of re-election in 2012, so what does she have to lose politically? Given her moderate views on other social issues, such as abortion, some suspect Hutchison is personally more gay-friendly than her abysmal voting record indicates. She’s only voted against us consistently for the last 15 years, they say, because that’s the only way to get re-elected as a Republican in Texas.
Well, so much for that theory. Hutchison’s office never responded to our months-old inquiry about her position on the amendment that would repeal “don’t ask don’t tell,” but she’s been sending letters to gay constituents indicating she’ll oppose it. And now, she’s announced that she’ll vote against Elena Kagan’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. Why? Well, because Kagan supported the gays when she limited access to military recruiters at Harvard University based on her opposition to DADT. From Hutchison’s statement:
“Her decision on military recruiters while at Harvard gives evidence of her personal views instructing her professional decisions in order to promote a social agenda. I simply cannot reconcile Ms. Kagan’s sparse record and my concerns about whether she will be an impartial arbiter of the law and so I will oppose her appointment.”
A repugnican is a repugnican is a repubnican.
Always need a victim group to show their love. We should really give TX back to the Mexicans, who are rapidly moving forward for their gay people – eg Marriage in Mex city, and civil unions in Coahuila state.s
Lady Warmonger is no friend to the gays. Never has been. Never will be. She is one homophobic bitch.
Kagan’s position at Harvard was discriminatory to our own military…oops, the one that doesn’t ask and doesn’t tell.
Kagan gives no hope that she will be an “impartial arbiter of the law”; good reason to vote “NO”. This is not an election or a social preference representative’s position. Hopefully Hutchinson will stand her ground and others will be encouraged to close the gap. Kagan is not a qualified nominee.
KBH is still smarting from being beaten so badly by Governor Goodhair and the Teabaggers and wants to establish herself as a REAL REPUBLICAN to stay in the Senate. Of course she’s going to appease the homophobes!
Not that I think Kagan ought to be on the Supreme Court. She’s yet another cipher selected for her ability to be confirmed than for any real vision.
Yeah, this is completely unlike the “evidence of Ms. Hutchison’s personal views instructing her professional decisions in order to promote an (anti-gay) social agenda”. Yeah, that’s what I thought… lying hypocrite. The problem is that Kagen doesn’t have the SAME agenda that Hutchison has. By the way, Kay. EVERYONE has an agenda, including ultra-conservative bigots. The world is going to be a much better place when these generational-homophobes cease to exist.
If Kagan kicked the recruiters off of the campus because the military was not adequately embracing gay acceptance, why did she not do the same for advocates of Shari’a Law, which mandates the execution of homosexuals? Perhaps KBH is being her usual understated self by not calling that piece of work what it is… Corrupt beyond even DC’s usual bounds.
how does this gay paper attract so many anti-gay views?
KBH is a anti-gay, anti-progressive, small-minded hater, always has been, always will be.

I was wondering the same thing. I assume that it is people who haven’t come to terms with their own sexuality and are in an investigative stage where they are toying with the concept. By promoting homophobic views on a gay website they pushing this decision further back.
They should go over to D Magazine’s blog..it is totally supportive of homophobes.
David in Houston – please don’t wish the generationals ceasing. I am a generational-straight ally. I have written KBH 2 letters so far, with no response. I continue to press her and the other political jokesters in this state for understanding of the GLBTQ’a issues on behalf of my lesbian daughter. KBH has been in office entirely too long. These occupational politicians need to get a “real” job. What 17 years we’ve had her in office? I asked her in one of my letters what exactly she had done that would be remembered 100 years from now while she was in the Senate. I guess since I didn’t hear from her, she hasn’t thought of anything yet. I will continue to try to educate her on GLBTQ’s and their issues. If she ever reads one of my letters, and “thinks”, she might change. Ya, right! Anyway, have to keep trying. GLBTQ agenda is not a political agenda, it is a human rights agenda. Stay loud and proud………….
Senator Hutchison, you continue to hurt and disappoint me, alongwith tens of thousands of LGBT families.
