Reparative” or “conversion” therapy is a dangerous practice that targets LGBTQ youth and seeks to change their sexual or gender identities. So-called “conversion therapy,” sometimes known as “reparative therapy,” is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades, but due to continuing discrimination and societal bias against LGBTQ+ people, some practitioners continue to conduct conversion therapy. Minors are especially vulnerable, and conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide. Why are some humans cruel to people who don’t even pose a threat to them – sometimes even their own children? Where does this behaviour come from and what purpose does it serve? Ruth, 45, London. Unlike sadists, psychopaths don’t harm the harmless simply because they get pleasure from it (though they may). Psychopaths want things. If harming others helps them get what they want, so be it. This is a seriously dangerous set of skills. Over millennia, humanity has domesticated itself. This has made it difficult for many of us to harm others. Many who harm, torture or kill will be haunted by the experience. Yet psychopathy is a powerful predictor of someone inflicting provoked violence Indeed, psychopathy can thrive in unstable, competitive worlds. Psychopaths’ abilities make them master manipulators. What Is a Counselor? A counselor is a skilled professional who offers guidance and support to individuals or groups navigating challenges or pursuing personal growth. They serve as compassionate listeners and objective observers, creating a safe space for clients to explore their feelings, beliefs, and behaviors. By fostering a nonjudgmental environment, counselors empower clients to confront obstacles, uncover insights, and develop effective coping strategies. Whether addressing issues related to mental health, relationships, career choices, or other life transitions, counselors play a crucial role in fostering self-awareness and facilitating positive change. The most commonly used psychological approach for treating depression is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to depressive symptoms; other effective approaches include Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), which addresses issues related to relationships, and Behavioral Activation Therapy (BA), which aims to increase positive activities in daily life. Key points about psychological treatments for depression: Cognitive therapy: Helps individuals recognize and modify negative thought patterns that contribute to depression. Behavioral therapy: Focuses on changing behaviors that are associated with depression, like social withdrawal or lack of activity. Interpersonal therapy (IPT): Examines how interpersonal relationships might be contributing to depressive symptoms and works to improve communication and social skills. Mindfulness-based therapies: Incorporate mindfulness practices to help manage emotions and reactions to stressful situations. Each individual has different characteristics and no two persons are the same. That is why is it important to identify this fact and to work according to each personality. Each person has his own way of understanding and doing things. Adaptability is key when dealing with people in general. In this context, the ability and variation each individual has when it comes to learning and understanding, differs greatly and involves a whole new level of educational psychology
