At 23, actor Lucas Hallauer (he/him) is already beginning a big theater career. After graduating college in 2023, he landed his first national tour with Mean Girls the Musical. After that finished, he was cast in Back to the Future as understudy for the lead role of Marty McFly.

But when the actor playing lead for that moved on, Hallauer got the ask to fill in full time into those signature Nike Mags self-tying shoes.

“It’s been really exciting and an unexpected surprise,” the actor said of stepping into the lead full time. “It’s also fulfilling to know that the producers and directors felt I was doing well enough to promote me.”

Back to the Future: The Musical opened Tuesday and runs through March 30 at the Music Hall at Fair Park by Broadway Dallas.

Hallauer was born in the early 2000s, but his parents — particularly his father — were handy in giving him all the ’80s inspiration as he was growing up.

“Those ’80s movies were almost required viewing as kids,” Hallauer said. “Dad was a big fan of Back to the Future, and I think it’s one of the best.”

So Hallauer understood he’s not only just on the lead role of any show; he taking on an iconic character in Marty McFly that was originated by an iconic actor.

“How can you live up to Michael J. Fox in that? My main approach is to have my own twist on things while keeping that character true to what people know. It’s fun to be him, and it’s like being a superhero,” Hallauer said.

A superhero that’s taking Dallas on a wild musical trip.
