Homocon leader, set to speak Saturday at Metroplex Republicans’ Grand Ol’ Party, downplays competition with Log Cabin

When Taylor Garrett, a gay Republican cast member from The A-List: Dallas, recently claimed his apartment had been vandalized by a “liberal,” Jimmy LaSalvia wasn’t surprised.
As executive director of the national gay conservative (or “homocon”) group GOProud, LaSalvia said he’s grown accustomed to attacks from what he calls “the gay left.”
“The gay left is the most hateful, intolerant, disgusting group of people I’ve ever come across in my lifetime, and everything we do is criticized by them,” LaSalvia told Dallas Voice. “They hate gay conservatives more than anything in the world, and I don’t know why. It’s just a matter of time before violence like that happens.”
Coincidentally — or not, depending on who you believe — LaSalvia had lunch with Garrett in Los Angeles just prior to the rock-throwing incident being reported.
They were joined by conservative pundit Ann Coulter — who serves as honorary chair of GOProud’s Advisory Council — and Logo filmed the rendezvous for an upcoming episode of The A-List.
The timing led some in the gay blogosphere to suggest that LaSalvia put Garrett up to falsifying his report about the rock, which allegedly shattered a window at his apartment in the Dallas Design District — perhaps to generate hype prior to the premiere of the show.
Again, though, LaSalvia said he wasn’t surprised. After all, when he reported that he’d been the victim of a hate crime in Washington, D.C. in July — and used it as an opportunity to craft an op-ed in support of gun rights — he, too, was called a liar.
“I think that is absolutely appalling that someone would question that, and until you’ve been through what I’ve been through, shut the fuck up, because I know what happened to me,” LaSalvia said. “It was very traumatic for me, and that is why I wrote about it, as a way to help me deal with what happened to me.
“And I would say the same for Taylor. He told people about it as a way for him to deal with what had happened to him. And it’s just appalling to me that anyone would question that, and then to speculate that it was a coordinated effort — that I would tell Taylor, ‘Oh yeah, fake a hate crime, you know, get lots of attention,’ — that’s just absurd. And I would just tell all of those people, until it happens to you, shut the fuck up.”
LaSalvia and GOProud board chairman Chris Barron, who co-founded the organization together in 2009, will be in Dallas this weekend for the Grand Ol’ Party — the annual fundraising dinner held by Metroplex Republicans of Dallas, formerly Log Cabin Republicans Dallas.
Also attending the dinner will be Garrett, according to Metroplex Republicans President Rob Schlein.
In a wide-ranging interview with Dallas Voice last week, LaSalvia criticized Log Cabin Republicans National — where he once served as director of programs and policy — for its recent decision to de-charter the Dallas Log Cabin chapter.
The decision was based in part on Schlein’s decision to invite LaSalvia and Barron to speak at the Grand Ol’ Party. LaSalvia said he believes Log Cabin leaders mistakenly view GOProud as a threat, even though the groups have different missions and donor bases.
“While there are dozens and dozens of gay organizations on the left, the fact that one other right-of-center gay organization exists is not acceptable to Log Cabin,” LaSalvia said. “They have a very specific mission, and they work within the gay establishment organizations in Washington to do their thing.
“We’re working in the conservative coalition with tea party groups and conservative organizations advancing a conservative agenda, and that’s very different from what they do in the Gay Inc. world of Washington.”

Anyone who would align themselves with Ann Coulter doesn’t deserve the time I’ve already wasted reading this ridiculous news’ story.
We have all seen the supposed photo of the hole in the window, and I’m not buying these peoples’ lies for one second. After all, they’ve aligned themselves with Ann Coulter. Say no more.
Perhaps LaSalvia does not understand that the victim in general does not advocate on their own behalf right after being attacked. And to come out with what looked like a policy push makes everyone roll their eyes.
Further, I don’t think having everyone armed when your attacked by a group would have changed things in his favor.

Jimmie, Garrett, and the Lady Baronesse (also known as Picasso face) are truely some of the most vile people in the spotlight right now. They will do or say anything for attention including lieing. They had people like GOProud in the Nazi concentration camp my father was in, Sobibor. They called them Kapos, Jews who tortured and killed their fellow Jews for miserable sign of acceptance. They were eventually killed too.

LaSalavia don’t seem to understand that most **conservative** gays class GOProud alongside the John Birch Society, the KKK and Westboro Baptist Church. The lunatic Right isn’t limited merely to the clowns currently running for the GOP nomination. It also include kapos like GOProud who have already told gays on both the right and the left they aren’t interested in marriage equality or any other “trivial” interests of gays.
Why Dallas Voice would give pixels to these “two guys with a Twitter feed” I don’t quite understand. Somebody should buy them a lifetime membership to Exodus International’s ex-gay “therapy” so they can work out their sexual orientation issues that are so embarrassing to them when exposed to the bright sunlight.

I hope that someday the likes of LaSalvia and Barron will no longer work to further divide the gay community for political gain. It only weakens the community versus strengthening it. I suppose, however, it makes them look good for the fifteen minutes they have on prime time. And for that, I wonder if they are as proud of themselves as I am as a gay liberal.

Some gay men and lesbians have conservative beliefs and act on them . Very few of them are Republicans or support the Republican Party because the current GOP doesn’t have conservative beliefs and doesn’t act conservative. Most gay men and lesbians are independent thinkers, neither conservative or liberal, right or left, and are repulsed by anyone who applies stereotypical labels to them.
The three gay men mentioned in this article don’t seem to base their thinking and actions on ideas, concepts and intellect but instead base their actions on personal emotions.

i think something that gays on the left don’t understand is that many of the conservative gays care about the economy and thus align with the GOP rather than the Democrats. They are avid free-market supporters. GOProud is in a crappy position because it tries to infuse the best of both worlds – fiscal conservatism and social liberalism – and create a political group that can support those ideas.
While I agree that Coulter is a cop-out, they don’t have a lot of support because the Christian Conservatives don’t see a separation between fiscal and social policy and GOProud does. Then again, neither does the gay-left. They think that welfare statism and equal rights goes hand in hand (and they don’t).
Jimmy, Taylor and Chris are all fiscal conservatives. They are not Quislings. They are not self-hating or straight wannabes. They do not think that gays should be in the closet – they supported the repeal of DADT, they supported (to my knowledge) ENDA and also support the repeal of DOMA.
Sadly, i think the problem in American Politics is that fiscal and social policies aren’t separate. Fiscal Conservatism somehow became thrown in with Social Conservatism and that’s the problem. Once you get past the duality of fiscal/social policies, you get to the crux of what GOProud wants – fiscal conservatism.

Grenadier, You and the other gay conservatives are ignoring the fact that it was fiscal conservatism that caused the recession and has kept it going. It was the Republican parties profoundly morally corrupt economic policies of piss-down all over the little people tax cuts for the wealthy, massive deregulation, rabid free market capitalism worship and ridiculous asinine socialism phobia that caused the recession in the first place; and the obstructionist Republicans in Congress that have stalled recovery. Also, S&P clearly stated that it was the Republicans refusal to put tax revenue on the table and the statements by several Republicans that we should go ahead and default on our debt that caused S&P to downgrade the US. I am a proud Liberal Democrat not because I confuse fiscal conservatism with social conservatism, but because they are both equally wrong and deeply dangerous to our country.

First, LaSalvia needs to clean up his language. Second, gay and Republican are a contradiction. I cannot imagine any gay woman or man participating in an organization that actively works to deny them equal civil rights. Third, what is the conservative agenda? They say that they believe in free markets, limited government and low taxes. I have yet to see the Republican Party by their actions reflect these principles. If this is indeed their agenda then why massive deficits under President Bush and deregulation causing a Great Recession? It will take decades to recover from the damage to the economy. What are the conservatives conserving? I guess their bank accounts.
It was not fiscal conservatism that caused the recession. That’s like saying “You didn’t use up all of your cash-flow, which is why you’re going broke.” Poor lending practices, fiat money, ill-conceived bailouts to corporations who went on to post record profits in their offshore offices, and the decline of the dollar due to Quantitative Easing have contributed to the recession. Fiscal liberalism only contributes to a bubble economy that results with all of our wealth getting pumped up to the rich. You can’t spend your way out of debt because the money all filters back to the same place eventually.

The difference between Gay Conservatives and socialist Liberal Democrats is that with socialist policies, it won’t matter if you’re gay or not because you’re going to be poor, you’re going to have a crap economy and gay or straight, your standard of living will decrease.

Would you like to talk about the Dems overspending and Clinton raiding Social security as well or do you simply overlook it? There have been very poor decisions on both sides because both sides are buying into and contributing to the economic model we have now. Just look at the value of the dollar today vs. 20 years ago, then look at your paycheck and realize that it hasn’t caught up with your spending habits. Collectively, we are in a far worse economic place today because of the system we support. It’s all about floating money to stretch it farther. When the GDP won’t cover our spending, our dollar is worth nothing, it’s too expensive to do business in the US and corporations are farming things out overseas, and we have no industry to prop up the economy, we WILL FAIL. It is coming. Good thing is at least there won’t be a bunch of “30k/yr millionaires” walking around when it happens.
Be patient all. Clean up takes time. It’s taking President Obama and Dallas County DIstrict Attorney Watkins time.

Answer: I simply overlook it. Unfortunately, the mistakes of the past are just that: mistakes. They can’t be changed. We can only hope that at some point, our national leaders (all of them–Democrats and Rethugicans alike) will get their heads out of the sand, their thumbs out of their *sses and their testosterone levels in check. Perhaps THEN they can start working together to fix what’s wrong, instead of trying to one-up each other side in the seemingly never-ending “who’s got the biggest one” contest.

Overspending did NOT cause the recession. Deregulation did. Austerity measures don’t cure a recession, they turn a recession into a depression. The stimulous plan absolutely did work. It kept us out of a second Great Depression. It didn’t work as well as it should have because it was watered down to please the Republicans. Furthermore, our enemployment rate would be much lower already if Republican governers were not slashing public sector jobs. Private sector jobs are growing. Not as much as we would like, but they are growing. All the brouhaha over the size of the debt was just a distraction from the real problems. The SIZE of the debt was not endangering our economy, the threat of DEFAULT was. No, both parties are not equally to blame for the state of our economy. The true blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the GOP.
