Is THIS the Queen of Fabulous?
I firmly believe that for the LGBT equality to make true and lasting progress, we need activists and allies in both the major political parties. Though I don’t always agree with the political viewpoints of the LGBT Republicans I know, I do think their presence and their efforts are vital to our community’s progress.
But hooking up with and/or supporting anti-gay politicians and pundits, I think, takes more than one giant step in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, that’s just what the LGBT Republican group GOProud has done by naming wing-nut Ann Coulter as honorary chair of the organization’s advisory board. Her “official title,” according to this GOProud press release, is “honorary chair and gay icon.”
GOProud board chair Christopher Barron said in the press release: ““Ann Coulter is a brilliant and fearless leader of the conservative movement. We are honored to have her as part of GOProud’s leadership. Ann helped put our organization on the map. Politics is full of the meek, the compromising and the apologists – Ann, like GOProud, is the exact opposite of all of those things. We need more Ann Coulters.”
Coulter said: “I am honored to serve in this capacity on GOProud’s Advisory Council, and look forward to being the Queen of fabulous.”
Umm, Ann, I know fabulous. And you aren’t it. “Fabulous” would not call John Edwards a “faggot” (a lying cheating jerk, sure, but not a faggot). Fabulous wouldn’t tell Joy Behar that you CAN pray the gay away or that only heterosexual men should be in the military. Fabulous would not tell TV interviewer Sean Hannity that if she had a gay son, she’d tell him he was adopted. Fabulous would not say that Rick Santorum’s comparison of gay sex to bestiality is an “indisputably true point.” Fabulous would not oppose same-sex marriage. Here’s the list of notables that Coulter is joining on the GOProud advisory board: Margaret Hoover, Grover Norquist, Andrew Breitbart, Liz Mair, Chuck Muth, Lisa De Pasquale, Christian Josi, Roger Stone, Andrew Langer, Kathryn Serkes and Bob Carlstrom.
Oh, and as for being a gay icon — uh no, Ms. Coulter. Not for this gay.
When did that nut job become a “gay icon”??? Honestly, I think they should give that title to Marcus Bachmann. Now, he’s just flamboyantly fancy! Get it, gurl!

As a Republican who is gay, I am very disappointed that GOProud would name name Ann Coulter the chair – even if honorary – of the board of directors. Tammye, I thank you for acknowledging that it’s important to have advocates in both political parties. But, Ann Coulter is a novelty (to put it nicely), not the chair of a board who is trying hard to gain acceptance in the party. There is something to be said that even the nuttiest of the conservatives are somewhat embracing gays and lesbians. But, this is not a wise move for GOProud. I think it will hurt their legitimacy of the organization.

This is like appointing Eva Braun honorary chair of your Synagogue.
But don’t confuse GOProud for a gay rights organization. They are NOT interested in gay rights. They have repeatedly stated that their goal is to remove President Obama and elect a Republican as president. In addition, they will not endorse in the primaries but have declared their intent to support whoever wins the nomination. So if Rick Santorum or Michelle Bachman gets the nomination, they can count on exuberant support from GOProud. Gay rights do not figure in the equation.
Gay republicans really ARE stupid, self serving, fully homophobia-internalizing morons, aren’t they? WTF?
