sports logoWith the first pitch of the season of Major League Baseball earlier this week, the NCAA championship just around the corner and the NBA finals set to start later this month and the NHL playoffs on its heels, it’s a perfect storm for sports fans. But it’s not just pro and college teams you have to root for — there’s lots going on among local gay teams. (Have a sports group, league or event you want to see covered? Dallas Gay Basketball Association (pictured) — The spring playoffs for this still-newish league start next week (April 11) with a winning team picked on April 18. (As of press time, the Suns was the only undefeated team, while the Clippers have yet to win a game.) But that’s not the end of the season — there’s still a banquet scheduled for Woody’s on April 20, starting at 7 p.m.

Oak Lawn Tennis Association — With weather like it is in Dallas, tennis is practically a year-round sport. The OLTA started its season last month, with events scheduled three times a week — at Samuell Grand Park (Sundays), LB Houston Tennis Center (Tuesdays) and Fair Oaks Tennis Center (Thursdays) — until the Texas Open tourney in October. The OLTA’s diversity board is also in the middle of a recruitment push to get more women to come out and enjoy the sport. OLTADallas.org.

Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association — If Dallas’ gay community can be said to have an official sport, it’s probably softball. Prior to its annual Beat the Heat Classic tourney (hosted over Memorial Day Weekend as usual, May 25–26), members will be out in force for the third annual Diesel Chili Kickoff this Sunday, April 7 at 4 p.m. at the Round-Up Saloon. Dallas Independent Volleyball Association — Fridays are game night with the DIVAs, with play continuing through May 3 until the Spring Tournament on May 11. But even before that, you’ll want to put down the ball and pick up your wallet to attend the Miss DIVA Pageant, which takes place April 14 at the Round-Up, starting at 7 p.m. DIVADallas.org.
