Kamara Akcion emerged as the victor at the Miss Gay Dallas America Pageant at the Round-Up Saloon on Wednesday, Feb. 20. She will advance to the Miss Gay Texas America competition this summer. In addition to winning the title, Akcion also won two categories: Talent and Male Interview. Linze Serell captured the first runner-up slot, followed by second runner-up London Lee. Serell won the On Stage Question and Answer category while Lee won the Evening Gown category.
Although a crown and plaques were up for grabs by the four contestants, the real winner of the night was Aspen Tyler, former Miss Dallas Obsession. Tyler, significantly hindered from the effects of a stroke two years ago, seemed to be an inspiration to all present. Dressed in full regalia, Tyler performed on stage without any aid after having applied her makeup entirely with her left hand. Several audience members and special guest had tears in their eyes as they walked up to tip or watch from afar. As a symbol of persistence and overcoming adversity, it was Tyler who presented Akcion with the winner’s plaque at the end of the night.
Also present at the competition were special guests Sally Sparkles, the currently reigning Miss Gay America; Charity Case, former Miss Gay America; and Kara Dion, the 2012 Miss Gay Texas America. Additional former titleholders included Danielle KC Whitney, current Miss Alamo City America; Kandy Cane; Chanel LaMasters; Onyx as special guest emcee; and others. Alyssa Edwards, contestant on this season of Rupaul’s Drag Race, was present as well, but only as a spectator and not as a competitor.
The Miss Gay America Pageant was established in 1971, and was modeled after the Miss America Pageant. With more than 40 titleholders, it is the first and longest pageant catering to female impersonators in the U.S. The Miss Gay Dallas America Pageant is a direct preliminary competition to the Miss Gay Texas America Pageant that will be held at The Heat in San Antonio from July 16-18.
