An Albuquerque Airport shuttle driver was suspended and the city’s human rights commission will investigate after the driver ordered a gay couple to the back of the bus because they were holding hands.
Ron McCoy and Chris Bowers flew to Albuquerque from Portland the week of the city’s Pridefest and for a driving trip through the Southwest.
Mayor Richard Berry ordered the investigation after seeing the report on TV.
“There’s no place in Albuquerque, N.M., or anywhere for discrimination,” he said.
On Monday, the bus company issued an apology, according to the Albuquerque Journal:
“We sincerely apologize to Messrs. McCoy and Bowers for any disrespectful treatment they received in New Mexico. Standard Parking respects the equal rights of all customers, and we do not condone or tolerate discrimination of any kind against any of our customers or employees, whether relating to sexual orientation, gender, age, race, nationality or religion.”
Employees at the company are going through sensitivity training.
