SPOTLIGHT: End With Red
The Afiya Center, a non-profit reproductive justice organization, educates and advocates for cis- and transgender women of color on the margins of society, including those affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. And like any non-profit bent on changing the world, it needs to raise money to do so.
Thus the need for the center’s second annual “End with Red: A Time for Solidarity” fundraiser and roundtable discussion series.
The event kicks off on Friday night with dinner and a keynote speech by Byllye Avery, founder of the Black Women’s Health Imperative, formerly the National Black Women’s Health Project.
On Saturday, the community is invited to attend three roundtables covering crucial themes. The first focuses on building a reproductive justice movement in Texas, emphasizing the current political climate as well as the movement’s absence of women of color.
The second roundtable will feature panelists discussing a holistic approach to and the structural barriers facing women, such as lack of insurance, domestic violence and HIV/AIDS. The day ends women of faith discussing faith-based responses to women’s health issues, including HIV/AIDS.
