Three other Missouri jurisdictions already recognize same-sex relationships
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Gay rights activists want Columbia to join three other Missouri jurisdictions that legally recognize domestic partners.
St. Louis, Kansas City and Jackson County already have domestic partnership registries. The legal recognition can allow partners to participate in health care decisions, burial arrangements and other matters.
Supporters are urging Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman and City Council members to back a domestic partnership ordinance.
The law would not be equivalent to legalizing same-sex marriage. Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in 2004.
