The Fort Worth City Council voted tonight, by a 6-3 margin, to amend the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance to include protections for transgender people.
The vote came shortly before midnight, following about four hours of public comment on both sides of the issue.
Watch for details later on this blog and in Friday’s Dallas Voice.
Thanks to Fort Worth City Council for approving transgender protections. Thanks Tammye for staying late and getting this news. I was there and we were wondering with each of the “No” votes if it was going to happen.
Yay!
Great job everyone. To my friends from Dallas, thanks for coming over to support us on this history making event!
Thank you FW CC for adding Transgender protection’s to the current descrimination policy!!
Will FW’s passing of an improved discrimination policy for GLBT folks in Tuesdays City Council meeting help to restore FW’s image?
-not likely with the Texas Taliban on the attack!;
with the Rainbow Lounge investigation taking so long to complete and being released on the same day as TABC’s investigation, no collusion here;
with FWPD’s & TABC’s controversial investigation findings;
with FWPD & TABC performing internal investigations with no over-site other than a REVIEW by Jacks;
with the bad news media that will surly occur around all the different political/civil rights groups.
Where does FW go from here?
INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION (Texas Rangers?) .
A small step for Fort Worth City Council. One giant leap for human rights. Thank you, Fort Worth City Council for taking the small step of acknowledgment that no one deserves discrimination.
The question I have now is whether they will actually hire me or anyone like me?
Amanda, they not only hired me…they allowed me (and two others that I know of) to transition on the job.
BraVo to Fort Worth, I must say my brows were raised this morning to find the news. I stayed up as late as possible but fell alseep shortly before midnight. Great Work DV! A wonderful step in the RIGHT direction fo’ sho!……
Tori, that’s great news! I am happy for you and the ones transitioning! And here I thought FW’ had a budget deficit and hiring freeze. (Which was coincidentally right on the heels of the Barnett Shale boom promises and hoop-la. )
So…where/how do we apply and do we state on our resume we are transgendered? Most resumes/applications get tossed during pre-screening. Just because they won’t discriminate, it usually doesn’t mean too much for us that are unemployed and looking for any sort of compassion.
Amanda, go to the city’s website at https://www.fortworthgov.org and look for openings. I think they have a hiring freeze but that doesn’t mean that they won’t hire critical positions when someone leaves, such as police communcations, customer service, etc. I sure wouldn’t let them know you are tg unless your presentation does not match your name on your official papers. If you have already transitioned and changed your name, gender marker on your drivers license and social security, I would just apply as who you are. Once I had all my stuff changed, I sent a copy of my name/gender marker change court order to my last two employers and asked them to note the change in my employee record. They did this with no problems. Of course, with my line of work (forensic scientist), I have to disclose my past every time I apply somewhere as part of my background check.
