North Texas’ Asian community is a vibrant one, especially when it comes to the food scene, from the Indian-influenced vegetarian cuisine at the Hare Krishna temple restaurant Kalachanji’s in East Dallas to the proliferation of sushi across the city to the Vietnamese restaurants along the Asian center near Baylor, and even Wolfgang Puck’s Five Sixty, which has expert sushi and Chinese influences. In fact, Chinese New Year is often a culinary event in there here parts.
But this weekend is actually Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year, which starts Friday and ends Sunday (this will be the Year of the Dog). Two local Thai restaurateurs, Joe and Sunny, have created a unique foodie tour to educate but especially delight two dozen gourmands with a guided minibus tour of three stops, including the Thai New Year’s Festival, on Sunday from 1–4 p.m.. The tour starts at Bangkok restaurant in Richardson on Belt Line, moves to festival for an extended stop, then ends up at Bangkok on Greenville Avenue.
