Oh, the religious right fear-mongering and fundraising that must occur after Prop 8 was overturned and Elena Kagan was confirmed to the Supreme Court — using buzzwords like “judicial activism,” “threats to our religious liberties,” and “gender does not matter.” Below are some excerpts from Focus On The Family’s/CitizenLink‘s fundraising letter Prop 8: Judge Finds Marriage “Irrational”:
In his ruling, Judge Walker wrote that there was no “rational basis” for supporting marriage as the union of a man and a woman–
despite the fact that 7 million California voters had approved the marriage amendment in 2008. Such judicial activism highlights the importance of nominating judges who adhere to the original understanding of the Constitution, rather than impose a social agenda against the will of the people.
Nothing like some argumentum ad populum going with the religious right belief system, eh? Because the majority votes for discrimination that means it’s morally correct? Does that mean that because the majority of Americans aren’t Evangelical, Pentecostal, or fundamentalist Christian, then does that mean they also believe the majority of Americans are correct on that?
My head spins with these thoughts.
Anywho, here’s another quote from the e-blast:
[T]o underscore how important this decision is, if not overturned by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court, let me be clear–legalizing same-sex marriage will result in:
• Your kids being taught in school that same-sex marriage is the moral equivalent of God’s design for marriage and that gender does not matter;
• More kids being deprived of the best chance to have both a mom and a dad; and
• Your tax dollars being used to subsidize benefits for married same-sex couples.
Exactly how are more kids going to be “deprived of the best chance to have both a mom and a dad”? Seriously, is that even a real argument? And don’t our tax dollars subsidize benefits for heterosexually married couples? *Sigh.*

But this ruling is not the end of the story for marriage as we know it. Our good friends at the Alliance Defense Fund have already filed an appeal, and this case is expected to move on to the 9th Circuit, and eventually to the Supreme Court.
Does anyone remember that the Alliance Defense Fund is a spin-off organization of Focus On The Family? That James Dobson was key in the formation of their “good friends at the Alliance Defense Fund”?

The Prop 8 ruling, along with the religious liberty cases explained in our CitizenLink Report, is exactly why Christians need to be actively involved in elections at every opportunity. We remain encouraged that people of faith once again have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote in November–both as an expression of that faith as well as one of the most basic forms of involvement in our system of government.

If one takes the record of the Alliance Defense Fund in their incredibly unsuccessful legal defense for the Prop 8 trial as the example of the expertise of their “trained attorneys,” I hope a lot of conservative Christian people of faith call the organization for legal assistance.
