In a feature story in this week’s edition, I talk about the growing trend of craft brews in North Texas. Among the most popular of this new crop is the Temptress, a milk stout from Wim Bens at Lakewood Brewing. (It’s actually in Garland, but Bens started as a home-brewer at his house in Lakewood.) And, as happens with craft beers, the seasonal suds are a draw among devotees.
This weekend, I got a jump-start tasting the latest seasonal blend: The Raspberry Temptress. You gotta figure the release — it comes out today — has “Valentine’s” written all over it. It’s much like the traditional Temptress, only with a sweet hint of berries on the finish. Lakewood only made about 30 barrels of the stuff, which will be distributed to vendors across the city, but don’t expect it to last long — there’s not much, and it’s delicious. Equally tasty, though, is the upcoming Saison style beer from Lakewood. They released the same last year — it has the light, refreshing qualities of spingtime beer — and there’ll be more of it than the Raspberry to enjoy.
And if you can’t find any at your local pub, take note: They have a taproom at Lakewood where you can taste ’em all.
