The other day the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation issued a press release praising The El Paso Times for publishing several pro-LGBT opinion pieces. GLAAD said it had reached out to the publisher of The EPT after the newspaper allowed those four recent anti-gay advertisements written by the Rev. Michael Rodriguez and paid for by an unidentified Plano couple.
The EPT publisher responded by inviting letters to the editor and opinion pieces, according to GLAAD, several of which the newspaper actually printed!!! Which is great and all, but if the EPT has truly had some sort of awakening on LGBT issues, we’re a little confused as to why the newspaper chose to run this story today about Rodriguez, saying he’s challenged three city leaders to a public forum.
Oh yeah? Really? Who gives a fuck? Can someone — perhaps someone at GLAAD — explain why The EPT is now giving Rodriguez editorial space in addition to advertising?
Religious bigots sicken me.
I understand that we must be offended by this story but this is equality. EPT has been very good about posting pro-LGBT articles but unfortunately, there is another side. I can understand if it was the DMN which basically ignores our community unless it’s something sensational. I know someone is gonna say if this was about African Americans then it would be a totally different story and I would not be defending their right to free speech. Actually I would, as long as there was a balanced debate. Do I like the KKK having rallies? Hell naw but the same laws that protect them protect us. There are tons of people who do like marriage equality rallies. I’m just saying, let them spew their hate and hopefully EPT will stay balanced with their editorials/advertisement. That’s what we should be looking for.
@Tisha: My point is that it’s just not newsworthy. If my puppy challenged the city officials to a forum, would they write about that?
LOL @ John…I agree…but this is El Paso…where I’m from in Louisiana, they did an article on one of my relatives b/c he drives his tractor around town b/c his car died. Picture and everything. Would that be considered newsworthy to a Dallas journalist? lol
