After receiving numerous emails and messages, we reported last week that LaCheryl Wilson had passed away.
We posted an article about the homeless woman who has been part of the Oak Lawn community for more than 35 years, but then started making some inquiries.
We contacted Dallas police who checked their records. They had no recent contact with Wilson. We checked with the Dallas County medical examiner. She hasn’t been taken to Parkland or sent to Terrell.
Then we were told she died in Fort Worth. We checked with the Tarrant County medical examiner (who also performs autopsies for Denton and Collin counties). No record there and no recent unidentified bodies.
All reports on the death of Wilson that we received were with great sadness and we wrote about Wilson out of a sense of loss to the community.
By the end of the week, we still had no way to confirm, so we left the obituary out of the print edition of the newspaper. At this point we are still unable to confirm or deny her death.
Members of her Facebook fan page will, as always, keep an eye out for her. If they spot her as the weather turns cold, they’ll make sure she has a blanket and a coat. Restaurant owners along the Strip will make sure she has something to eat.
