Fly-half Chuck Blaum, left, and flanker Mark Way play for the Dallas Diablos.

Hundreds of gay rugby players from around the globe descended on Manhattan over Memorial Day weekend. The Dallas Diablos were among the 26 teams that competed in the biennial Bingham Cup (the tournament that pays tribute to 9/11 hero Mark Bingham, the gay rugby player who died on United Flight 93). The first Bingham Cup was in 2002, held in San Francisco. In 2004, it was held in London.

For the 2006 tournament, the new Bowl division was created to recognize various levels of play. The Diablos were one of eight teams that competed in the Bowl division. For the first five matches, the Diablos remained undefeated: Beating Philadelphia Gryphons, 22 to 8; Portland Avalanche 35 to 3; Dublin’s Emerald Warriors, 29 to 0; quarterfinals against Atlanta Bucks, 26 to 0; and semifinals against Austin Lonestars 19 to 5. In the Bowl final, the Boston Ironsides beat the Dallas Diablos, 3 to 0.

In the Cup division, the San Francisco Fog (champs of the 2002 and 2004 Bingham Cups) were defeated by the Sydney Convicts in the final match, 16 to 10. The Convicts also won the Plate Division.
