Dallas’s fledgling gay basketball group is off to a promising start.

We reported this summer about the newly formed Dallas Gay Basketball Association, which, in its rookie season, has already proved a popular draw for sports-hungry North Texans. Earlier this month, it generated some pretty sizable cred.

The DGBA-sponsored Dallas Hotshotz attended the Hurricane Classic in Fort Lauderdale, entering the tourney for gay hoopers in the Competitive Division. Hotshotz players Marquis Owens, Harold Steward, Ken Keistler, Jamaal Green, Dean Moore, Dedtric Ray, Steven Coleman (pictured left), Patrick Cornelius (third from left) and Bryan Dockter competed in the pool play starting Oct. 13 against 35 other nationwide teams, eventually being seeded 4th. (DGBA members Rafael Ross, Tristan Dixson, Konata Childs and Anthony Graham also participated in the tournament.)

On the single-elimination round on Oct. 14, the Hotshotz defeated the Minneapolis MPLS Bounce in a squeaker (43-42) to advance to the championship match, where they fell to the Sentinels B (Red) from D.C., but still secured second-place overall in the division.

Next up for the league on the road: A Chicago tourney in April, followed by one in New York next October.
