Singer Demi Lovato, right, invited transgender legislator Danica Roem to attend the AMAs with her on Sunday

Long known as a very vocal ally of and recently self-proclaimed as a member of the LGBT community pop superstar Demi Lovato caught everyone’s attention on Sunday night, Nov. 19, when she walked the red carpet at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles with Danica Roem, the former journalist who made history Nov. 7 when she became the first openly-transgender person ever elected to a state legislature in the U.S., when she defeated Republican incumbent and “chief homophobe” Bob Marshall for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Lovato told E! News that she was “completely inspired” when she heard Roem’s story, and that she felt attending the awards show with Roem was in line with the anti-bullying theme of her hit song, “Sorry Not Sorry,” which she performed live during the show Sunday. Lovato said, “I wanted to have her in the audience with me tonight because I feel like we have been through some of the same things and now we get to share this experience together.”
Lovato in October released a 78-minute video documentary, called Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, on YouTube. In that video she talked at length about the bullying she endured in school, including an incident when a “popular girl” in her class circulated a “petition” urging Lovato to commit suicide. It was also in that video that Lovato — who has always adamantly refused to discuss her sexual orientation — declared that she is, basically, bisexual, saying she is “open to human connection. So whether that’s through a male or a female, it doesn’t matter to me.”
Lovato kicks off a new tour with DJ Khaled next February, bringing that tour to Dallas on March 7, 2018, for a show at the American Airlines Center. AND you can watch for Lovato on the cover of the 2018 issue of OUT North Texas, the official LGBT relocation and visitors guide for North Texas, which will hit streets Jan. 5.
