Defense attorneys seek to oust judge before trial begins in gay teen Lawrence King's murder

VENTURA, Calif. — Defense attorneys for a Southern California teen accused of murdering a gay classmate are seeking to have the judge in the case recuse himself before the trial begins.
Lawyers for defendant Brandon McInerney claimed in a motion Monday, July 19 that Ventura County Superior Court Judge Charles Campbell won’t be fair.
The judge recently refused to allow the defense more time to prepare for trial and planned to begin jury selection on Tuesday, July 20.
McInerney is charged as an adult in the shooting of 15-year-old classmate Larry King in front of other students at the E.O. Green School in Oxnard in February 2008. He has pleaded not guilty.
The judge has five days to respond to the defense recusal motion. Another judge will hear the legal arguments.
Prosecutor Maeve Campbell has criticized the move.
